About Oven Temperature Converter
The Oven Temperature Converter turns any oven temperature into every unit you might need โ Celsius, Fahrenheit, and UK Gas Mark โ and adds the one thing most converters miss: the matching fan (convection) oven setting. Enter a value from any recipe, choose whether it is for a conventional or fan oven, and instantly read the equivalents on a visual oven dial, along with the heat level and what that temperature is good for cooking.
Oven Temperature Conversion Chart
This chart shows the most common oven temperatures side by side. The fan column is the setting to use in a fan or convection oven โ always about 20 ยฐC below the conventional value.
| Gas Mark | Conventional ยฐC | Fan ยฐC | Fahrenheit | Heat Level |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ยผ | 110 ยฐC | 90 ยฐC | 225 ยฐF | Very Cool |
| ยฝ | 120 ยฐC | 100 ยฐC | 250 ยฐF | Very Cool |
| 1 | 140 ยฐC | 120 ยฐC | 275 ยฐF | Cool |
| 2 | 150 ยฐC | 130 ยฐC | 300 ยฐF | Cool |
| 3 | 170 ยฐC | 150 ยฐC | 325 ยฐF | Warm |
| 4 | 180 ยฐC | 160 ยฐC | 350 ยฐF | Moderate |
| 5 | 190 ยฐC | 170 ยฐC | 375 ยฐF | Moderately Hot |
| 6 | 200 ยฐC | 180 ยฐC | 400 ยฐF | Hot |
| 7 | 220 ยฐC | 200 ยฐC | 425 ยฐF | Hot |
| 8 | 230 ยฐC | 210 ยฐC | 450 ยฐF | Very Hot |
| 9 | 240 ยฐC | 220 ยฐC | 475 ยฐF | Extremely Hot |
Note: cooking charts round these values (180 ยฐC is listed as 350 ยฐF even though the exact conversion is 356 ยฐF). This converter shows the precise mathematical result and then matches it to the nearest standard gas mark.
Oven Temperature Conversion Formulas
All three units describe the same heat, so converting between them is a matter of two arithmetic rules plus a gas-mark lookup.
Conventional vs Fan (Convection) Ovens
A conventional oven heats from top and bottom elements, so heat rises and sits still. A fan oven (also called convection) adds a fan that circulates hot air, cooking food faster and more evenly. Because moving air transfers heat more efficiently, a fan oven browns food at a lower dial setting. The standard manufacturer guidance is to reduce the temperature by 20 ยฐC (roughly 35โ40 ยฐF) when converting a conventional-oven recipe to a fan oven, and often to shorten the cooking time slightly too.
Understanding Oven Heat Levels
- Very Cool / Cool (110โ150 ยฐC): Slow roasting, rich fruit cakes, meringues, drying, and gentle braises.
- Warm (150โ170 ยฐC): Casseroles, custards, cheesecakes, and slow bakes.
- Moderate (170โ190 ยฐC): The everyday baking zone โ cakes, cookies, sponges, and muffins.
- Hot (190โ220 ยฐC): Roasting meat and vegetables, pies, bread, and crumbles.
- Very / Extremely Hot (220 ยฐC and above): Crispy roast potatoes, scones, puff pastry, pizza, and searing.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose the input unit: Select Celsius, Fahrenheit, or Gas Mark to match your recipe.
- Enter the temperature: Type the value, or choose a gas mark from the list.
- Pick your oven type: Tell the tool whether the value is for a conventional oven or a fan (convection) oven.
- Click Convert: Read every equivalent, the recommended fan-oven setting, the heat level, and the visual oven dial with a full step-by-step breakdown.
Why Accurate Oven Temperature Matters
Cakes and breads rely on precise heat to rise and set. Even 10โ20 ยฐC off can leave a bake sunken or dry.
Forgetting the 20 ยฐC fan reduction is the most common cause of over-browned edges and burnt bases.
US recipes use Fahrenheit, UK recipes use gas mark, and most others use Celsius โ converting keeps you on target.
Many ovens run hotter or cooler than the dial. An oven thermometer plus the right target keeps results consistent.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much lower should a fan oven be set?
Set a fan (convection) oven about 20 ยฐC lower than the temperature a conventional-oven recipe gives. For example, a recipe calling for 180 ยฐC in a conventional oven becomes 160 ยฐC in a fan oven. The moving air browns food faster, so the lower dial setting produces the same result.
What is 180 ยฐC in Fahrenheit and Gas Mark?
180 ยฐC is 356 ยฐF and Gas Mark 4. On most oven charts this moderate baking temperature is rounded to 350 ยฐF. In a fan oven you would set it to 160 ยฐC.
What is the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?
Fahrenheit equals Celsius multiplied by 9, divided by 5, plus 32. To go the other way, subtract 32 from the Fahrenheit value, then multiply by 5 and divide by 9 to get Celsius.
How do gas marks relate to Fahrenheit?
For Gas Mark 1 and above, Fahrenheit equals 25 times the gas mark plus 250. So Gas Mark 4 is 25 ร 4 + 250 = 350 ยฐF. The low fractional marks are exceptions: Gas Mark ยผ is about 225 ยฐF and Gas Mark ยฝ is about 250 ยฐF.
Do gas ovens have a fan setting?
Most gas ovens are conventional and do not have a fan, so gas marks are conventional temperatures. Some modern gas ovens do include a fan. If yours does, use the fan Celsius value this converter shows, which is 20 ยฐC lower than the conventional temperature.
Why does my converted temperature differ from the recipe chart?
Recipe charts round temperatures for convenience, so 180 ยฐC is listed as 350 ยฐF even though the exact conversion is 356 ยฐF. This converter shows the precise mathematical conversion and then matches it to the nearest standard gas mark, which is why you may see a small difference from a rounded chart.
