About Retirement Countdown
The Retirement Countdown turns your retirement date into a live, ticking countdown — and goes beyond the usual calendar maths to show the figures that actually feel real: the workdays you have left (business days minus your paid holidays), the paychecks, Mondays and weekends still ahead, and how far along your working life already is on an animated progress ring. Enter your retirement date directly, or let the tool work it out from your date of birth and the age you plan to retire.
Why count workdays instead of calendar days?
"10,000 days until retirement" sounds enormous. But you do not work every one of those days — weekends, public holidays and your paid leave all come off. Counting only the days you actually clock in gives a much smaller, more honest and more motivating number. This is the headline figure the Retirement Countdown is built around, and very few countdown tools calculate it.
How Workdays Are Counted
The tool walks every single day between today and your retirement date, keeps the ones that fall on your working week, then subtracts a pro-rated share of your annual paid days off:
"Business days" are the days of your chosen work week (Monday–Friday by default, or a 4-day or 6-day week). The 365.25 keeps leap years accurate. Work hours are then estimated as workdays × 8.
How the Retirement Date Is Found
In From my age mode, the tool adds your chosen retirement age to your date of birth. Someone born on 15 June 1985 retiring at 65 has a retirement date of 15 June 2050. In I know my date mode you simply pick the date yourself — useful if your employer or pension scheme has set it for you.
What Each Result Means
The days, hours, minutes and seconds remaining, ticking in real time toward the start of your retirement date.
The actual number of days you will clock in, after weekends and paid holidays are removed.
Estimated remaining pay periods on a biweekly schedule — one paycheck every 14 days.
How many more Monday mornings stand between you and your last day of work.
The share of your total working life — from your career start to retirement — that is already behind you.
The number of weekends you will enjoy while still working before retirement frees up every day.
Typical Retirement Ages
| Style | Typical Age | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| FIRE / very early | 40 – 50 | Financial Independence, Retire Early — requires aggressive saving |
| Early retirement | 55 – 62 | Often uses private pensions or savings before state benefits begin |
| Standard retirement | 65 – 67 | Common state-pension / full-benefit age in many countries |
| Working longer | 68 – 70+ | Boosts pension income and delays drawing down savings |
Ages are general illustrations only — your own pension, savings and local retirement rules decide what is realistic for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many workdays do I have left until retirement?
The Retirement Countdown counts every business day between today and your retirement date for your chosen work week (Monday to Friday by default), then subtracts a pro-rated share of your annual paid days off. The result is the number of actual workdays you have left, which is far smaller and more meaningful than the raw calendar-day count.
How is the retirement date calculated from my age?
In "From my age" mode the tool adds your chosen retirement age to your date of birth. For example, a person born on 15 June 1985 who retires at 65 has a retirement date of 15 June 2050. You can also enter the date directly in "I know my date" mode.
What does the working-life progress ring show?
The ring shows how much of your total working life has already passed. It compares the time from when you started working to today against the full span from your career start to your retirement date, so 70% means roughly seventy percent of your working years are behind you.
How many paychecks do I have left before retirement?
The tool estimates remaining paychecks assuming a biweekly pay schedule, which is one paycheck every 14 days. If you are paid monthly or weekly your number will differ, but the biweekly estimate is a useful, widely-used benchmark.
Does the countdown update live?
Yes. The days, hours, minutes and seconds tick down in real time in your browser, counting toward midnight at the start of your retirement date. The workday and paycheck totals are calculated for today and refresh whenever you reload the page.
Can I change my work week and holidays?
Yes. You can choose a 4-day (Mon–Thu), 5-day (Mon–Fri) or 6-day (Mon–Sat) work week and enter how many paid days off you receive each year. Both settings change the workday, work-hours and Mondays-left figures.
