How Baby Eye Color Is Inherited
Eye color comes from the amount and type of melanin pigment in the iris. While more than a dozen genes play a part, two genes do most of the work and form the basis of the classic predictor model:
- OCA2 (the brown/blue gene): Its brown allele B is dominant over the non-brown allele b. A single B produces brown eyes.
- EYCL1 (the green/blue gene): Among people without a brown allele, its green allele G is dominant over the blue allele g. So bb with a G gives green, and bb gg gives blue.
Because brown is dominant, it is the most common eye color in the world. Blue, needing two recessive copies at both genes, is the rarest of the three in most populations.

Why Grandparents Make the Prediction More Accurate
A brown-eyed parent can be one of two things genetically: BB (two brown copies) or Bb (brown carrying a hidden blue). You cannot tell which just by looking. Grandparents solve this: a blue-eyed grandparent proves the brown-eyed parent inherited a blue allele, so that parent must be a Bb carrier. Can two blue-eyed parents have a brown-eyed baby?
