It uses a genetics-based two-gene inheritance model and shows the odds on animated iris visuals, a Punnett square, and a clear step-by-step breakdown of how dominant and recessive eye-color genes combine.

How Baby Eye Color Is Inherited

Eye color comes from the amount and type of melanin pigment in the iris. While more than a dozen genes play a part, two genes do most of the work and form the basis of the classic predictor model:

  • OCA2 (the brown/blue gene): Its brown allele B is dominant over the non-brown allele b. A single B produces brown eyes.
  • EYCL1 (the green/blue gene): Among people without a brown allele, its green allele G is dominant over the blue allele g. So bb with a G gives green, and bb gg gives blue.

Because brown is dominant, it is the most common eye color in the world. Blue, needing two recessive copies at both genes, is the rarest of the three in most populations.

These figures assume average carrier rates in the population. The biggest gains in accuracy come from adding grandparents, which is what makes this predictor different from a simple lookup table.

Why Grandparents Make the Prediction More Accurate

A brown-eyed parent can be one of two things genetically: BB (two brown copies) or Bb (brown carrying a hidden blue). You cannot tell which just by looking. Grandparents solve this: a blue-eyed grandparent proves the brown-eyed parent inherited a blue allele, so that parent must be a Bb carrier. That single fact can roughly double the predicted chance of a blue-eyed baby. This tool runs the same inheritance math across two generations, which is why entering grandparents sharpens the odds.

Can you predict a baby's eye color from the parents?

You can estimate the probabilities, but not predict with certainty. Eye color is controlled by several genes. This tool uses a well-established two-gene model to estimate the chance of brown, green, and blue eyes from the parents' eye colors, and refines the estimate when grandparents' eye colors are added.

Can two blue-eyed parents have a brown-eyed baby?

It is very unlikely. Under the standard genetic model two blue-eyed parents carry only the recessive non-brown alleles, so almost all of their children have blue or, rarely, green eyes. A brown-eyed child is possible only through rare additional gene effects, so this tool reports it as essentially zero.

Can two brown-eyed parents have a blue-eyed baby?

Yes. Brown is dominant, so a brown-eyed parent can secretly carry the recessive blue allele. If both parents are carriers, roughly one in four of their children can have blue eyes. Entering a blue-eyed grandparent confirms the carrier status and increases the predicted blue probability.
