The Horsepower Formula

The relationship between torque, RPM, and horsepower is defined by:

Why 5,252?

The Magic Number: James Watt defined 1 horsepower as 33,000 foot-pounds of work per minute. Since torque is rotational, converting requires dividing by 2π: 33,000 / (2 × π) ≈ 5,252. This is also the exact RPM at which horsepower and torque (in lb-ft) are numerically equal.
