How do I change the frame rate of a video?

Does changing the FPS make the video faster or slower?

No. This tool re-times the frames so the video keeps its original duration and the audio stays in sync. Converting a 60-second clip from 30 to 60 fps still gives you a 60-second clip. If you actually want the video to play faster or slower, use the Adjust Video Speed tool instead.

Will converting to a higher FPS make the motion smoother?

Not really. Going from 30 to 60 fps duplicates existing frames rather than inventing new ones, so the motion carries the same amount of information it always did. Genuine smoothness has to be captured in the camera. Converting up is useful for matching a project's frame rate, not for improving the footage.

What happens when I convert to a lower FPS?

Frames are dropped at regular intervals. Going from 60 to 30 fps discards every second frame, which is usually invisible for talking-head or screen content but can make fast panning look slightly less fluid. It does reduce the file size.

Which frame rate should I choose?

Can I enter a fractional frame rate like 29.97 or 23.976?

Yes. The custom field accepts decimals, so the broadcast rates 29.97, 23.976 and 59.94 all work. These odd numbers exist for historical NTSC colour-signal reasons and are still required by many delivery specifications.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly runs inside your browser tab, so the file is read from your device, processed on your own CPU, and written straight back locally.

Is the audio kept?

Yes. The original audio track is carried across and stays in sync with the picture, because the video's total duration does not change.

Why does the tool show a different original FPS than I expected?

The original rate is an estimate the browser reports, and it is not always available or exact — variable-frame-rate footage from phones and screen recorders in particular has no single true value. Treat it as a guide; the conversion itself targets the rate you choose.

Does converting reduce quality?

The output is re-encoded once with H.264, so there is a small generation loss, and converting down permanently discards the dropped frames. Resolution is unchanged. Convert from your original file rather than from an already-converted copy.
