Ability Score Methods Explained

4d6 Drop Lowest (Classic)

Roll four six-sided dice, discard one lowest die, and sum the remaining three. Repeat for STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS and CHA in that order. Each base score ranges from 3 to 18, with an average around 12.24; listed racial bonuses are added afterward. The generator does not arrange scores around the chosen class.

Standard Array

Shuffles 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8 across the six abilities, then adds listed racial bonuses. The score set is fixed, but its assignment is random and may not suit the chosen class. Campaign eligibility depends on your table.

Point Buy Equivalent

Randomly selects one of six preset arrays costing exactly 27 points, then shuffles its scores across abilities. Base scores are 8–15; listed racial bonuses are added after purchase. The card shows each base score’s point cost. This is a preset sampler, not an interactive point-buy editor or a class optimizer.

Heroic (2d6+6)

Roll two six-sided dice and add 6 for each ability: base scores range from 8 to 18, with a mean of 13 before listed racial bonuses. Heroic is an alternative generation option; agree on its use with your game group.

How HP Is Calculated

This draft uses fixed class HP gains and assumes Constitution stays unchanged across levels. Extra racial, subclass or feat HP is not included:

  • Level 1: Maximum hit die value + Constitution modifier
  • Each level after 1st: Fixed class gain (hit die / 2 + 1) + Constitution modifier, with at least 1 HP gained at each level
  • Example: A Level 5 Barbarian (d12) with +3 CON has 12+3 + 4×(7+3) = 55 HP
  • Minimum: Each later level adds at least 1 HP, even if its fixed gain plus Constitution modifier is zero or negative

How to Use This Generator

  1. Review the rule scope — This generator uses D&D 5e (2014-style) presets and produces a character draft.
  2. Choose ability score method — Use 4d6 drop lowest, shuffled standard array, a shuffled 27-point preset, or the alternative Heroic method.
  3. Set character level — Levels 1–20 affect HP and proficiency. Level-up ability increases, feats, spells and subclass features are not generated.
  4. Choose how many characters — Generate 1 to 5 characters at once. Perfect for creating a complete adventuring party.
  5. Click "Summon Character" — Review the resulting draft, then copy the card or expand its plain text for manual copying.

Use Cases

For Dungeon Masters

Generate NPC concepts or faction members with personality traits, ideals, bonds and flaws. Add and check combat statistics, equipment and features before using them in an encounter.

For Players

Find your next character concept by generating random combinations you might never have considered. A Kenku Paladin? A Warforged Druid? Sometimes the best characters come from unexpected combinations.

For Newcomers

Explore the vast options available in D&D 5e without being overwhelmed. Each character card explains what the race, class, and alignment mean, making it a learning tool as well as a generator.

For One-Shots and Quick Games

When you need characters fast for a one-shot adventure or convention game, generate an entire party in seconds. Each character comes with enough personality detail to start roleplaying immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are the ability scores generated?

The four methods are 4d6 Drop Lowest, shuffled Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), a shuffled 27-point preset chosen from six arrays, and Heroic (2d6+6). Listed racial bonuses are added afterward. Assignments are not optimized for class. Heroic requires agreement at your table. Results are generated pseudorandomly on the server.

Is this tool compatible with D&D 5th Edition?

Character concept draft using D&D 5e (2014-style) presets. Pathfinder and other RPG rules are not implemented. Review equipment, racial defenses, subclasses, spells and level-up choices before play.

Can I generate a complete party of characters?

Absolutely! You can generate up to 5 characters at once, perfect for creating a full adventuring party. Each character is generated independently with their own random race, class, alignment, ability scores, personality traits, and backstory elements.

What races and classes are available?

The generator includes 20 playable races (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, Dragonborn, Gnome, Half-Elf, Half-Orc, Tiefling, Orc, Goliath, Tabaxi, Aasimar, Kenku, Firbolg, Genasi, Tortle, Kobold, Changeling, and Warforged) and 14 classes (Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard, Artificer, and Blood Hunter).

How is HP (Hit Points) calculated?

HP starts with the maximum class hit die plus Constitution modifier. Each later level adds the fixed class gain (half the hit die plus 1) and Constitution modifier, with a minimum gain of 1 per level. A level 3 Fighter with +2 CON has 12 + 8 + 8 = 28 HP. Constitution is assumed unchanged; extra racial, subclass and feat HP is not included.
