About Reverse Video
Reverse your short video clips effortlessly with our Free Online Video Reverser. This tool processes videos directly in your browser using WebAssembly technology (FFmpeg.wasm). This means your files are never uploaded, ensuring privacy, but it also means the tool is limited by browser memory.
This tool is best suited for short videos (ideally under 20 seconds). Longer or high-resolution videos will likely cause errors due to browser memory constraints.
Simply upload your short video. You can reverse the entire clip or specify a start and end time for a segment. Click 'Reverse Video', watch the preview, and download your reversed MP4 file.
Features:
- Client-Side Processing: Uses FFmpeg.wasm for secure, in-browser video reversing. Your files stay on your device.
- Optimized for Short Clips: Works best with videos under ~20 seconds due to browser memory limits.
- Multiple Video Formats: Supports common formats like MP4, WEBM, MOV, AVI (browser/FFmpeg dependent).
- Full or Partial Reversal: Reverse the whole clip or select a specific segment.
- Audio Reversal Included: Reverses both video and audio tracks.
- Instant Preview: Preview the reversed output before downloading.
- Easy Download: Download the final reversed video (MP4 format).
- Privacy Focused: No video data is sent to servers.
- Progress Tracking: Monitor the reversing process.
How to Use:
- Load Engine: Wait for the video processing engine (FFmpeg) to load.
- Upload Video: Drag & drop your video file or click "Select Video". (Remember: short clips work best!)
- Preview Video: Check the original video and note its duration.
- Select Time Range (Optional):
- Leave defaults (0s to end) to reverse the entire clip.
- Use sliders/inputs to set Start Time and End Time for a segment. A warning will appear if the selected duration exceeds ~20 seconds.
- Reverse: Click the "Reverse Video" button.
- Wait & Preview: Watch the progress bar. The reversed video appears below when done. Errors (especially memory errors for long videos) will be shown.
- Download: Click "Download Reversed Video".
- Share (Optional): Click "Share Tool".
Quick Answer
To reverse a video, upload a short clip here, optionally set a start and end time, click Reverse Video, and download the backwards MP4. Both the picture and the sound are reversed, so speech plays backwards too. This tool works best on clips under about 20 seconds: reversing requires every frame in the range to be decoded and held in browser memory at once, so long or high-resolution files will run out of memory and fail. Everything is processed locally with FFmpeg.wasm — nothing is uploaded, and there is no watermark or sign-up.
Common Use Cases
Reverse-motion social clips
Objects flying back into a hand, a splash pulling itself together, or a jump landing in reverse are staples of TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Boomerang-style loops
Join a clip to its reversed copy and the action runs forwards then backwards in an endless loop.
Undoing accidental reversal
Footage exported backwards by another tool can be put right by reversing it a second time.
Creative transitions
Reversing a short shot such as a door closing gives you an unusual, hard-to-fake transition into the next scene.
Analysing motion backwards
Playing a technique in reverse can make the sequence of movements clearer to a student than watching it forwards.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I make a video play backwards?
Upload a short clip, optionally choose a start and end time, and click Reverse Video. The tool rewrites the frames and the audio samples in reverse order and gives you an MP4 to download.
Why does the tool only work well with short videos?
Reversing is not a streaming operation: the last frame has to be written first, so the entire selected range must be decoded and held in memory at once. A browser tab has far less memory than a desktop video editor, so long or high-resolution clips exhaust it and the job fails. Around 20 seconds is a safe upper bound.
My video failed with a memory error. What can I do?
Select a shorter time range, or reduce the source first: compress it, crop it, or scale it down, then reverse the smaller file. Closing other browser tabs and using a desktop browser also helps.
Is the audio reversed too?
Yes. Both the video and the audio streams are reversed, so speech and music play backwards. If you want reversed picture with normal sound, remove the audio first and add a new track afterwards.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. FFmpeg.wasm runs inside your browser tab, so the clip is processed on your own device and never transmitted anywhere.
Can I reverse only part of a video?
Yes. Set the start and end times before processing and only that segment is reversed and exported. This is also the best way to keep the job inside the memory limit.
Does reversing reduce quality?
The frames themselves are unchanged, but the output is re-encoded to MP4, so there is a small generation loss. Resolution, frame rate and the length of the selected range stay the same.
How do I make a boomerang effect?
Reverse your clip here, then use the Merge Videos tool to join the original and the reversed copy end to end. Loop the result if you want it to repeat.
