About Storage Unit Size Calculator
The Storage Unit Size Calculator turns a guessing game into a clear answer. Instead of staring at a list of unit sizes and hoping for the best, you tick off the furniture, appliances, and boxes you actually need to store. The tool adds up their real packed volume, factors in how tightly you plan to pack, and recommends the smallest standard self-storage unit — from a 5 × 5 closet to a 10 × 30 garage — that fits everything with a little room to spare.
How the Storage Unit Size Calculator Works
Storage units are priced by floor area, but what fits is decided by volume. This calculator works in three short steps: it sums the cubic feet of everything in your inventory, converts that volume into the floor area you need, and matches the result to the nearest standard unit size.
The usable height is taken as 8 ft, the typical ceiling of a storage unit. The packing efficiency reflects the fact that you never fill every cubic foot — you need an access path, and most people do not stack perfectly to the ceiling. You choose loose, typical, or tight packing, which the calculator turns into an efficiency of 45%, 60%, or 75%.
Common Storage Unit Sizes and What They Hold
| Unit Size | Floor Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 5 × 5 | 25 ft² | A reach-in closet: boxes, seasonal items, a few small pieces of furniture. |
| 5 × 10 | 50 ft² | A studio or single room — mattress set, dresser, and boxes. |
| 5 × 15 | 75 ft² | A one-bedroom apartment without the large appliances. |
| 10 × 10 | 100 ft² | Two rooms of furniture plus appliances and boxes (the most popular size). |
| 10 × 15 | 150 ft² | A two-bedroom home, appliances included. |
| 10 × 20 | 200 ft² | A multi-bedroom house or a one-car garage of belongings. |
| 10 × 30 | 300 ft² | A large four-to-five bedroom house or full garage and vehicle storage. |
Tips to Fit More Into a Smaller Unit
- Stack vertically. Storage units are about 8 ft tall. Boxes and light items stacked high are the single biggest way to drop down a size and save money.
- Use uniform boxes. Same-size boxes stack into neat, stable columns and waste far less space than mixed shapes.
- Disassemble furniture. Take legs off tables, break down bed frames, and remove shelves. Flat-packed furniture stores in a fraction of the space.
- Fill the hollows. Pack soft goods, linens, and small items inside dressers, appliances, and totes so no cubic foot goes to waste.
- Leave an aisle. If you need regular access, choose the "loosely packed" option so the calculator leaves room to reach the back.
How to Use This Calculator
- Build your inventory: Use the plus and minus buttons to set the quantity of each item you plan to store. A quick example can fill a typical home in one tap.
- Choose how you will pack: Select loosely, typically, or tightly packed to match your stacking style and access needs.
- Click Calculate: The tool totals your volume and recommends the right unit size.
- Review the results: See the recommended unit, how full it will be, a comparison of every size, your volume breakdown by category, and a step-by-step calculation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what size storage unit I need?
Add up the volume of everything you want to store, then divide by the usable capacity of a unit. This calculator does it for you: tick off your furniture, appliances, and boxes, choose how tightly you will pack, and it recommends the smallest standard unit (from 5 × 5 up to 10 × 30) that fits your belongings with a little room to spare.
What is the most common storage unit size?
The 10 × 10 unit is the most popular all-purpose size. It holds roughly the contents of a one to two bedroom home, including major appliances and a stack of boxes. Smaller 5 × 5 and 5 × 10 units suit dorms, studios, and seasonal storage, while 10 × 20 and 10 × 30 units handle multi-bedroom houses and garages.
How much can a 10×10 storage unit hold?
A 10 × 10 unit has 100 square feet of floor and about 800 cubic feet at the ceiling. In practice you fill 45 to 75 percent of that depending on how you stack, so plan on roughly 360 to 600 usable cubic feet. That is typically two rooms of furniture plus appliances and boxes.
Should I get a bigger storage unit than I need?
A little headroom is wise. It lets you keep an access path, retrieve items without unpacking everything, and add things later. This calculator recommends the smallest unit that fits, but if your fill percentage is above about 85 percent or you expect to add items, consider the next size up.
How tall are storage units?
Most drive-up and interior storage units have ceilings around 8 feet, and some go higher. This calculator assumes 8 feet of usable height. Stacking boxes and light items high is the single best way to fit more into a smaller, cheaper unit.
Is this storage size estimate exact?
It is a close estimate based on typical packed volumes for each item and a chosen packing efficiency. Odd shapes, very fragile items, and the access you want will all affect the real result, so treat the recommendation as a strong starting point and view a unit in person when you can.
