About Shopify Profit Calculator
The Shopify Profit Calculator shows exactly what you keep on every Shopify order. It subtracts Shopify's payment processing fee, any third-party transaction fee, and a share of your monthly subscription, then takes out your product cost (COGS), shipping cost, and ad spend to reveal your true per-order net profit and margin. Most calculators stop at fees — this one goes further and gives you the two numbers every paid advertiser needs: your break-even ROAS and your max CPA.
What Fees Does Shopify Charge?
Shopify sellers pay a recurring subscription plus per-transaction processing fees. The exact rates depend on your plan and whether you use Shopify Payments.
| Plan | Monthly | Online processing (Shopify Payments) | Third-party fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2.0% |
| Shopify | $105 | 2.7% + $0.30 | 1.0% |
| Advanced | $399 | 2.5% + $0.30 | 0.5% |
The third-party fee is the Shopify quirk most sellers miss: Shopify adds it only when you check out through an outside gateway (like PayPal or an external card processor). Use Shopify Payments and that extra fee is waived. Rates vary by country and Shopify revises them periodically, so every rate in this calculator is editable.
The Shopify Profit Formula
Your true profit is what the customer pays, minus every Shopify fee, minus your own costs, minus the ad spend it took to win the sale:
The profit margin is that net profit as a share of revenue:
Break-even ROAS and Max CPA — the Numbers That Matter
If you run Facebook, Google, or TikTok ads, two numbers decide whether a campaign actually makes money. First, your contribution margin before ads — revenue minus fees and product costs — is the pool of money available to pay for advertising and still profit. The most you can spend to acquire one order without a loss (your max CPA) is exactly that pool:
Return on ad spend (ROAS) is revenue divided by ad spend. Because you break even when ad spend equals your contribution margin, the minimum ROAS you can run at without losing money — your break-even ROAS — is:
So if a $50 order leaves $20 after fees and product costs, your break-even ROAS is 2.5×, and your max CPA is $20. Keep your real ROAS above 2.5× (or your real cost per order below $20) and you profit; drop below it and every "successful" sale loses money.
How the Reverse Pricing Works
Pricing is tricky because the percentage fees rise as your price rises — you cannot simply add a fixed markup. This calculator solves the price algebraically. Letting r be the sum of the percentage fee rates and m your target margin, the revenue needed is:
Fixed costs are the parts that do not scale with price — the flat processing fee, your share of the subscription, product cost, shipping cost, and ad spend. Subtract the shipping you charge and divide by quantity to get the selling price. Setting m = 0 gives your break-even price.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter your order: Pick your currency and Shopify plan, then enter the selling price, quantity, and any shipping you charge.
- Enter your costs: Add your product cost (COGS), actual shipping cost, and the ad spend it takes to win one order.
- Confirm fees: Your plan's processing and third-party rates are pre-filled and editable. Set whether you use Shopify Payments and, optionally, your monthly order volume to spread the subscription.
- Calculate: See your net profit, margin, break-even ROAS, max CPA, the price to hit your target margin, and your break-even price.
Tips to Keep More of Each Order
- Use Shopify Payments. It waives the extra 0.5%–2% third-party transaction fee — often the easiest margin win available.
- Watch your CPA against max CPA. A campaign can look busy and still lose money if your cost per order creeps above your contribution margin.
- Raise average order value. Bundles and upsells spread the flat $0.30 processing fee and your ad cost over more revenue, lifting margin.
- Recheck COGS and shipping regularly. Supplier and postage prices drift; stale numbers quietly erode your real profit.
- Treat break-even ROAS as a floor. Set your ad platform's target ROAS comfortably above it to leave room for refunds and returns.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate profit on Shopify?
Shopify profit is the revenue the customer pays, minus Shopify's payment processing and subscription fees, minus your product cost and shipping cost, minus the ad spend it took to get the sale. This calculator subtracts every fee and cost so you see the real money left over on each order, not just the fees.
What is break-even ROAS?
Break-even ROAS is the minimum return on ad spend you need before advertising starts losing money. It equals your revenue divided by your contribution margin before ads. For example, if an order brings $50 of revenue and leaves $20 after fees and product costs, your break-even ROAS is 2.5×, meaning each advertising dollar must bring back at least $2.50 in sales to break even.
What is max CPA?
Max CPA, or maximum cost per acquisition, is the most you can pay to win one order and still break even. It equals your contribution margin before ad spend. Spend less than this per order and you profit; spend more and you lose money even though the sale looks successful.
What fees does Shopify charge?
Shopify charges a monthly subscription (about $39 on Basic, $105 on Shopify, and $399 on Advanced) plus a payment processing fee of roughly 2.5% to 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction with Shopify Payments. If you use a third-party payment gateway instead, Shopify adds an extra transaction fee of 0.5% to 2%. Rates vary by country and plan and can change, so every rate here is editable.
Does the Shopify transaction fee apply if I use Shopify Payments?
No. Shopify waives its extra third-party transaction fee when you use Shopify Payments. You still pay the standard payment processing fee, but the additional 0.5% to 2% transaction fee only applies when you check out with an outside gateway such as PayPal or Stripe.
How much should I sell my product for on Shopify?
Enter your costs, ad spend, and a target profit margin, and the reverse pricing tool tells you the exact selling price to use. Because every percentage fee scales with price, it solves the price so that after all fees, product costs, and ad spend you keep the margin you want.
