Laundry Detergent Dosage Calculator
Find the right amount of laundry detergent for any wash. Tailors the dose to detergent type, load size, soil level, water hardness and machine, shows it on a measuring cap, and estimates the money you waste by overfilling.

About Laundry Detergent Dosage Calculator
The Laundry Detergent Dosage Calculator tells you exactly how much detergent to use for any wash — whether you use liquid, powder, or pods. Instead of guessing or simply filling the cap, it tailors the dose to your load size, soil level, water hardness, and machine type, shows the amount on a visual measuring cap, and reveals how much detergent and money you waste each year by overdosing. Using the right amount means cleaner clothes, less residue, and real savings.
How Much Laundry Detergent Should You Use?
For a typical medium, normally-soiled load in moderate water with a modern high-efficiency (HE) machine, you only need about 35 mL (roughly 2 tablespoons) of liquid detergent, 60 mL of powder, or one pod. That is far less than most people pour. Independent testing repeatedly finds households using two to four times the detergent they actually need — which does not clean better, just builds up residue and drains your wallet.
The Detergent Dosage Formula
This calculator starts from a base dose and scales it by four independent factors:
Each factor nudges the dose up or down relative to a reference wash. A small, lightly-soiled load in soft water on an HE front-loader gets the smallest dose; a large, heavily-soiled load in very hard water on a standard top-loader gets the most.
Detergent Dosage Chart
| Load | Liquid | Powder | Pods |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small, light soil | ~15 mL (1 tbsp) | ~25 mL | 1 pod |
| Medium, normal soil | ~35 mL (2 tbsp) | ~60 mL | 1 pod |
| Large, heavy soil | ~70 mL (4–5 tbsp) | ~120 mL | 2 pods |
| Extra large, very dirty | ~100+ mL | ~160+ mL | 2 pods |
These are starting points for moderate water and HE machines. Hard water and standard (non-HE) machines push the amounts higher, which is exactly what the calculator accounts for.
What Changes the Right Dose?
More clothes need more detergent. Doses scale roughly with how full the drum is, from a quarter-load to a packed drum.
Mud, sweat, food, and stains demand more cleaning power. Lightly-worn clothes need noticeably less than gym kit or work clothes.
Minerals in hard water bind to surfactants and weaken them, so hard and very hard water need 20–40% more detergent or a water softener.
HE washers use little water, so detergent is concentrated and a small dose works. Standard top-loaders use more water and need more detergent.
Why You Should Not Overdose
Pouring extra detergent is one of the most common laundry mistakes, and it backfires:
- Residue on clothes: excess detergent does not fully rinse out, leaving a stiff, dull, sometimes itchy film.
- Skin irritation: leftover surfactants and fragrance can trigger rashes, especially for children and sensitive skin.
- Machine odour and mould: suds build up in seals and pipes, feeding bacteria and creating that musty smell.
- Worse cleaning: too many suds cushion clothes and trap loosened dirt instead of carrying it away.
- Wasted money: every extra millilitre is detergent you paid for and literally pour down the drain.
Why Underdosing Is Also a Problem
Using too little detergent leaves clothes grey and dingy over time, fails to fully lift body oils and odours, and lets minerals and dirt redeposit on fabric. The goal is the optimal amount — enough to clean thoroughly, not so much that it cannot rinse away. That sweet spot is the green zone on the dosage gauge above.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose your detergent: select liquid, powder, or pods.
- Describe the load: pick the load size and how soiled the laundry is.
- Set water and machine: choose your water hardness and HE or standard machine.
- Add optional details: enter loads per week, plus container price and size, to estimate yearly waste and savings.
- Click Calculate: see the dose on a measuring cap, an overdose/underdose gauge, a factor breakdown, and a full step-by-step explanation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much laundry detergent should I use?
For a medium, normally-soiled load in moderate water with an HE machine, about 35 mL (roughly 2 tablespoons) of liquid or 60 mL of powder is enough. Use less for small or lightly soiled loads and more for large, heavily soiled loads or hard water. Most people use two to four times more than they need.
Does hard water need more detergent?
Yes. Minerals in hard water bind to the surfactants in detergent and reduce their cleaning power, so hard and very hard water typically need 20 to 40 percent more detergent, or the help of a water softener, to get the same result.
Why does HE detergent use less?
High-efficiency (HE) washers use much less water than standard top-loaders, so detergent is more concentrated in the drum. Using a standard amount of detergent in an HE machine causes excess suds, poor rinsing, and residue. HE machines need only a small, measured dose.
What happens if I use too much detergent?
Overdosing leaves soap residue on clothes, can trigger skin irritation, builds up in the machine and causes odours, makes extra suds that cushion clothes from cleaning, and simply wastes money. More detergent does not mean cleaner laundry.
How many pods should I use per load?
One pod is dosed for a medium load. Use one pod for small to medium loads and two pods only for very large or heavily soiled loads. Because pods cannot be split, use a measured liquid or powder when you need finer control or in very hard water.
How much money can the right dose save?
If you normally fill the cap but only need half of it, you can cut detergent use roughly in half. At several loads a week that adds up to tens of litres and many dollars of detergent saved every year, while your clothes come out cleaner with less residue.
