About Chinese Gender Predictor
The Chinese Gender Predictor uses the ancient Chinese Gender Chart โ also called the Chinese birth chart or Qing dynasty gender calendar โ to guess whether you are having a boy or a girl. The chart is read from two numbers: the mother's lunar (nominal) age and the lunar month of conception. The clever part of this tool is that you do not need to work out those Chinese-calendar values yourself: just enter ordinary calendar dates and the predictor converts them to the traditional Chinese lunar calendar for you, then highlights your cell on the full animated chart above.
What is the Chinese Gender Chart?
The Chinese Gender Chart is a centuries-old table that is said to have been discovered in a royal tomb near Beijing. It pairs a mother's age with the month she conceived to predict her baby's sex. Versions of the chart have circulated for generations and remain a popular piece of pregnancy fun around the world. It is important to know up front that the chart has no scientific basis โ it is a tradition and a game, not a medical test.
How the Prediction Works
Reading the chart takes two values, and both are based on the Chinese lunar calendar rather than the Western (Gregorian) one:
1. Mother's Chinese lunar age. In Chinese tradition a baby is considered one year old at birth (nominal age, or "xลซ suรฌ"), and everyone adds a year at Chinese New Year. In practice this equals the lunar year of conception minus the lunar year of the mother's birth, plus one.
2. Lunar month of conception. The Gregorian conception date is converted to the corresponding month in the Chinese lunar calendar, which is the month used to read across the chart.
This tool performs both conversions automatically using a built-in Chinese lunisolar calendar covering 1900 to 2049, so the lunar age and lunar month it shows match the values you would get from a traditional Chinese almanac.
How to Use This Chinese Gender Predictor
- Choose your input method. Use "From dates" to let the tool convert everything for you, or "Enter lunar age & month" if you already know your traditional Chinese values.
- Enter the mother's birth date. This is used to calculate her Chinese lunar age.
- Enter the conception or due date. Pick whether you are giving the conception date, the due date, or the first day of your last period โ the tool adjusts to estimate conception.
- Click Predict. See whether the chart says boy or girl, view the lunar conversion, and watch your cell light up on the full chart.
Which Date Should I Enter?
- Conception date โ the most accurate input if you know it (for example from ovulation tracking or IVF).
- Due date โ the tool estimates conception about 266 days before your due date.
- Last menstrual period (LMP) โ the tool estimates conception about 14 days after the first day of your last period, when ovulation typically occurs.
Is the Chinese Gender Predictor Accurate?
No. Independent studies that compared the chart's predictions with real birth outcomes found it correct roughly 50% of the time โ exactly what you would expect from flipping a coin. Because a baby's sex is determined by chromosomes at the moment of fertilization, and not by the mother's age or the month of conception, the chart cannot influence or reveal the outcome. Enjoy it as entertainment and a keepsake, not as a basis for any decision.
How Is a Baby's Gender Actually Determined?
A baby's biological sex is set by the sperm at conception: an X-carrying sperm produces a girl (XX) and a Y-carrying sperm produces a boy (XY). The only reliable ways to learn your baby's sex are medical: a mid-pregnancy ultrasound (usually around 18โ22 weeks), NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing) from about 10 weeks, or diagnostic genetic tests such as amniocentesis or CVS.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Chinese Gender Predictor?
It is a fun tool based on the ancient Chinese Gender Chart, said to date back centuries to the Qing dynasty. It predicts whether you are having a boy or a girl from the mother's lunar age and the lunar month in which the baby was conceived.
How is the mother's lunar age calculated?
Traditional Chinese age counts a baby as one year old at birth and adds a year at each Chinese New Year. In practice it equals the lunar year of conception minus the lunar year of the mother's birth, plus one. This tool converts both dates to the Chinese lunar calendar automatically.
What date should I use for conception?
Use the actual conception date if you know it. If not, you can enter your due date and the tool estimates conception about 266 days earlier, or enter the first day of your last menstrual period and it estimates conception about 14 days later.
Is the Chinese Gender Chart accurate?
No. Studies have found the chart is correct about 50% of the time, which is no better than a coin flip. It has no scientific basis and is intended purely for fun and entertainment, not for medical decisions.
What is the only accurate way to know my baby's gender?
Reliable gender determination comes from medical tests such as a mid-pregnancy ultrasound, NIPT blood testing, or genetic testing like amniocentesis. The Chinese Gender Chart is only for entertainment.
