About Gift Card Tip Calculator
The Gift Card Tip Calculator works out your tip and grand total when you pay with a gift card, then splits that total between your gift card balance and the cash you still owe. Instead of guessing whether your card has enough, you instantly see how much the card covers, how much you must add in cash, and whatever balance is left on the card afterward — plus the most generous tip your card can fully cover.
Why a Regular Tip Calculator Is Not Enough
A standard tip calculator assumes you can pay any amount. A gift card cannot — it has a fixed balance. When the bill plus tax plus tip is larger than what is on the card, part of the payment spills over to cash or another card. This calculator models that spill-over directly, so you know exactly what to hand over at the table.
Gift Card Tip Formula
The math runs in three short steps: find the tip, add everything up, then apply the gift card.
The "tip base" is either the pre-tax bill or the post-tax total, depending on which option you choose. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is standard; tipping on the post-tax total is a little more generous.
Worked Example
Suppose your bill is $60.00, tax is $5.40, you want to tip 20% on the pre-tax bill, and your gift card has $50.00 left.
- Tip: $60.00 × 20% = $12.00
- Grand total: $60.00 + $5.40 + $12.00 = $77.40
- Card covers: min($50.00, $77.40) = $50.00
- Cash needed: $77.40 − $50.00 = $27.40
Your $50.00 gift card is fully used, and you pay the remaining $27.40 in cash. If the card had $90.00 instead, it would cover the whole $77.40 and leave $12.60 on the card for next time.
Standard Tip Percentages
| Service | Typical Tip | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant (sit-down) | 15% – 20% | 20% for good service is common in the US |
| Exceptional service | 20% – 25% | Reward standout experiences |
| Counter / takeout | 0% – 10% | Optional; round up or tip the jar |
| Food delivery | 10% – 20% | Higher in bad weather or long distance |
| Bar (per drink) | $1 – $2 | Or 15% – 20% of the tab |
| Hair salon / spa | 15% – 20% | Tip on the pre-tax service price |
What Affects How Much Cash You Need
The higher your remaining balance, the more of the total the card absorbs and the less cash you need.
Tax adds to the grand total and can push it past the card balance, even when the bill alone would fit.
A bigger tip raises the total. Use the coverage insight to see the largest tip your card can still cover.
Tipping on the post-tax total costs a little more than tipping on the pre-tax bill.
Tips for Paying with a Gift Card
- Check the balance first. Knowing the exact balance before you order avoids surprises at the table.
- Ask how the restaurant handles tips. Some add the tip to the same card; others process the tip separately, which matters if the balance is tight.
- Leave the tip in cash if the card is low. If the card barely covers the bill, tipping in cash keeps your server happy and avoids a declined charge.
- Use up small balances. The coverage insight shows the biggest tip your card can fully cover, a handy way to spend down a near-empty card.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you tip on a gift card?
Yes. At most restaurants you can add a tip to a gift card just like a regular card, as long as the card has enough balance to cover the bill plus the tip. If the balance is too low, the card covers what it can and you pay the rest, including any remaining tip, in cash or with another card.
How does this gift card tip calculator work?
It first calculates your tip from the bill and tip percentage, then adds the bill, tax, and tip to get the grand total. It applies your gift card to that total: the card covers the smaller of its balance and the total, and any amount left over becomes the cash you need to pay. It also shows your leftover card balance if the card covers everything.
What happens if my gift card does not cover the whole bill?
The gift card is applied first and covers as much of the total as its balance allows. The difference between the grand total and the card balance is the amount you pay in cash or with another payment method. The calculator shows this cash amount and how much of the bill the card was short by.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax bill is standard and slightly cheaper, while tipping on the post-tax total is more generous. This calculator lets you choose either basis, so you can compare both and decide what feels right.
How much tip can my gift card cover?
After paying the bill and tax, whatever is left on the gift card can go toward the tip. The calculator shows the largest tip percentage your card can fully cover with no cash needed, so you can tip as generously as the balance allows.
Can I split the bill between several people?
Yes. Enter the number of people sharing the bill and the calculator shows the total per person and the cash per person, in addition to the overall split between the gift card and cash.
