Dog Crate Size Calculator
Find the correct dog crate size from your dog's length, height, and weight โ or estimate it straight from weight if you cannot measure. The calculator adds the recommended clearance, matches your dog to the smallest standard crate model (22" to 54") that fits, and draws a to-scale diagram showing exactly how your dog fits inside. Includes puppy divider guidance for house-training, example breeds, and full Imperial / Metric support.

About Dog Crate Size Calculator
The Dog Crate Size Calculator turns your dog's measurements โ or just its weight โ into the exact standard crate size to buy. It adds the recommended clearance, matches your dog to the smallest stock crate model from 22" up to 54", shows the inner dimensions and example breeds, and draws a to-scale diagram so you can see precisely how your dog fits inside. It even handles growing puppies with divider guidance for house-training.
How to Measure Your Dog for a Crate
You only need two measurements. A soft tape measure and a treat to keep your dog still are all it takes.
- Length โ measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail (where the tail meets the body), not the tip of the tail. Adding tail length makes the crate bigger than needed.
- Height โ have your dog sit, then measure from the floor to the top of the head. For breeds with tall erect ears (German Shepherd, Corgi), measure to the tip of the ears. Dogs often sit up in a crate, so sitting height is the number that matters.
The Clearance Rule
A correctly sized crate lets your dog stand up, turn around, and lie down comfortably โ with a little room to spare, but no more. The standard rule of thumb:
Add 2 inches for a snug, secure den; add up to 4 inches for extra comfort on large or anxious dogs. This calculator uses the 2-inch minimum to find the smallest standard crate that fits, then shows you exactly how much extra room that model actually gives.
Dog Crate Size Chart
Standard wire crates come in a handful of nominal lengths. Match your dog's required length and height to the smallest size that clears both.
| Crate | Size | Inner L x W x H (in) | Typical Weight | Example Breeds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18" | XS / Toy | 18 x 12 x 14 | Up to 10 lb | Chihuahua, Toy Poodle |
| 22" | Extra Small | 22 x 13 x 16 | 11โ25 lb | Yorkshire Terrier, Maltese |
| 24" | Small | 24 x 18 x 19 | 26โ30 lb | Pug, Boston Terrier, French Bulldog |
| 30" | Medium | 30 x 19 x 21 | 31โ40 lb | Beagle, Cocker Spaniel |
| 36" | Large | 36 x 23 x 25 | 41โ70 lb | Bulldog, Border Collie |
| 42" | Extra Large | 42 x 28 x 30 | 71โ90 lb | Labrador, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd |
| 48" | XX-Large | 48 x 30 x 33 | 91โ110 lb | Rottweiler, Bernese Mountain Dog |
| 54" | Giant | 54 x 37 x 45 | 111 lb+ | Great Dane, Mastiff, St. Bernard |
Inner dimensions follow common MidWest iCrate / Life Stages nominal sizes; brands vary slightly, so confirm a specific model before buying.
Crate Sizing for Puppies
Here is the mistake almost every first-time owner makes: buying a crate that fits the puppy today. Within weeks the pup outgrows it, and you buy again. But buying a full adult-size crate right away creates a different problem โ a puppy will happily sleep in one end and use the other as a bathroom, which sabotages house-training.
The fix is a divider panel. Buy the crate sized for your dog's expected adult weight, then use the divider to block off the extra space so the puppy has just enough room to stand, turn, and lie down. As the puppy grows, move the divider back. Because dogs instinctively avoid soiling their sleeping area, a snug section is the single most powerful house-training tool you have. When you tick the puppy box, this calculator sizes the crate for the adult dog and shows where to set the divider now.
Wire vs Plastic vs Soft Crates
- Wire crates โ the sizes above. Well ventilated, foldable, and almost always come with a divider. Best all-round choice for home and house-training.
- Plastic (airline) crates โ more den-like and required for most air travel. Use our Pet Travel Crate Size Finder for IATA-compliant airline sizing.
- Soft-sided crates โ light and portable for calm, trained dogs, but not for chewers or un-house-trained puppies.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose units and method: Pick Imperial or Metric, then choose whether you measured your dog or want to estimate from weight.
- Enter your dog's size: Add the length and height, or just the weight. A weight in measure mode helps cross-check body shape.
- Growing puppy? Tick the puppy box and enter the expected adult weight so the crate is sized for the future.
- Calculate: See the recommended crate, its inner dimensions, a to-scale fit diagram, clearance, breeds, and divider advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size crate does my dog need?
Measure your dog's length from the nose to the base of the tail and its height from the floor to the top of the head while sitting. Add 2 to 4 inches to each measurement, then choose the smallest standard crate whose inner length and height meet those numbers. This calculator does the matching for you and shows the exact model size.
How do I measure my dog for a crate?
For length, measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail, not the tip of the tail. For height, have your dog sit and measure from the floor to the top of the head, or to the tip of the ears for breeds with tall erect ears. Use those two numbers to size the crate.
Can a crate be too big?
Yes. A crate that is much larger than your dog can slow house-training because the dog can sleep in one corner and use the other end as a bathroom. The ideal crate lets the dog stand up, turn around, and lie down with a few inches to spare, and no more. For puppies, buy the adult size and use a divider panel.
What crate size should I buy for a puppy?
Buy a crate sized for your puppy's expected adult weight so you only purchase once, then use a divider panel to block off the extra space while the puppy grows. Move the divider back as the puppy gets bigger. This calculator estimates the adult crate size and the divider position for you.
How much bigger than my dog should the crate be?
Add at least 2 inches to your dog's length and height, and up to 4 inches for extra comfort. Beyond that the crate becomes too roomy for secure resting and house-training. Very large or anxious dogs can go toward the 4 inch end of the range.
Which crate size is right for a Labrador or Golden Retriever?
Most adult Labradors and Golden Retrievers weigh 60 to 80 pounds and fit a 42 inch Extra Large crate with inner dimensions around 42 x 28 x 30 inches. Larger individuals may need a 48 inch crate. Always confirm with your dog's own measurements.
