How to create an invoice

1. Add your branding: Click the logo box to upload your logo (or drag an image onto it), pick an accent color, and enter your business name and contact details under From.
2. Enter the client and invoice details: Fill in the Bill To section, then set the invoice number, issue date, due date and currency.
3. Add line items: Add a row for each product or service with its description, quantity and rate. The line amount and subtotal are calculated for you.

How the invoice total is calculated

The math behind the totals is simple and transparent:

• Line amount = quantity × rate
• Subtotal = the sum of every line amount
• Discount = a fixed amount, or a percentage of the subtotal
• Tax = tax rate × (subtotal − discount), so discounts are applied before tax
• Total = subtotal − discount + tax + shipping

Applying the discount before tax matches the most common billing convention in the US, UK, EU, Canada and Australia, where tax is charged on the net (post-discount) amount.

How is the total calculated?

Each line amount is quantity multiplied by rate. The subtotal is the sum of all line amounts. The total is the subtotal minus any discount, plus tax calculated on the discounted subtotal, plus any shipping charge.
