About Amazon FBA Calculator
The Amazon FBA Calculator estimates the real profit you keep on every unit you sell through Fulfillment by Amazon. It works out the referral fee for your category, auto-detects the FBA size tier from your item's dimensions and weight to estimate the fulfillment fee, adds monthly storage, and subtracts your product cost and inbound shipping to reveal your net profit, profit margin and ROI. It also solves for your break-even price and the price you need for a target margin, all shown on a clear profit waterfall.
What Fees Does Amazon FBA Charge?
Selling on Amazon with FBA means three per-unit fees come out of every sale before you see a cent of profit:
- Referral fee โ a percentage of the total sale price that Amazon takes for every item sold. The rate depends on the product category (most are 15%), and a $0.30 per-item minimum applies to most categories.
- FBA fulfillment fee โ a flat, per-unit fee that covers picking, packing and shipping your order. It is set by the product's size tier and shipping weight, not by the sale price.
- Monthly storage fee โ charged for the space your inventory occupies in Amazon's warehouses, billed per cubic foot and higher during the OctโDec peak season.
On top of these, most sellers pay a flat $39.99/month Professional selling plan, which is a fixed business cost rather than a per-unit fee, so it is not included in the per-unit profit here.
Amazon FBA Profit Formula
Your net profit per unit is simply your sale price minus every Amazon fee and minus your own costs:
How the FBA Size Tier Is Decided
The fulfillment fee depends entirely on the size tier, which Amazon assigns from your unit's weight and its longest, median and shortest sides. This calculator applies the same logic so you can see which tier your product lands in:
| Size Tier | Max Weight | Max Dimensions (L ร W ร H) |
|---|---|---|
| Small Standard | 16 oz | 15 ร 12 ร 0.75 in |
| Large Standard | 20 lb | 18 ร 14 ร 8 in |
| Large Bulky (Oversize) | 50 lb | 59 ร 33 ร 33 in, girth โค 130 in |
| Extra-Large (Oversize) | Over 50 lb | Beyond the bulky limits |
For large-standard and oversize items, Amazon bills on the shipping weight โ the greater of the unit's actual weight and its dimensional weight (length ร width ร height รท 139). This stops light-but-bulky items from being billed too cheaply.
Typical Referral Rates by Category
| Category | Referral Rate |
|---|---|
| Most categories (Home, Toys, Sports, Tools, Pet, Booksโฆ) | 15% |
| Consumer Electronics, Computers, Camera, Cell Phone Devices | 8% |
| Automotive & Powersports | 12% |
| Watches | 16% |
| Clothing & Accessories | 17% |
| Jewelry | 20% |
| Beauty, Grocery, Baby (low-price items) | 8% under threshold, else 15% |
What Affects Your FBA Profit?
Smaller, lighter products fall into cheaper fulfillment tiers, so package design has a direct impact on profit.
An 8% electronics referral versus a 17% clothing referral can be the difference between profit and loss.
Your cost of goods is usually the biggest lever โ negotiating supplier pricing widens every margin.
Slow-moving stock racks up monthly storage and long-term storage surcharges that quietly erode profit.
PPC and promotions are not in this per-unit fee math โ keep a healthy margin to fund them.
Returns and refunds reduce your effective margin, so a thin margin is risky for high-return categories.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter price and category: Type your sale price and select the product category so the correct referral rate is applied (or choose Custom to set your own rate).
- Enter your costs: Add your product cost, inbound shipping to Amazon, and any other per-unit costs such as prep or labels.
- Enter weight and size: Provide the unit weight and the package dimensions so the size tier and fulfillment fee can be estimated. You can override the FBA fee with the exact figure from Seller Central.
- Click Calculate: Review your net profit, margin and ROI, the fee waterfall and donut, your size tier, the break-even price and the price needed for your target margin.
Frequently Asked Questions
What fees does Amazon FBA charge?
Amazon FBA sellers pay a referral fee (a percentage of the sale price that depends on the category, with a $0.30 per-item minimum), an FBA fulfillment fee (a flat fee per unit based on the product size tier and shipping weight), and a monthly storage fee based on the volume your inventory occupies. Many sellers also pay a monthly Professional selling-plan subscription, which is not charged per unit.
How is the Amazon referral fee calculated?
The referral fee is the sale price multiplied by the category referral rate. Most categories are 15 percent, while consumer electronics is 8 percent, automotive is 12 percent, clothing is 17 percent and jewelry is 20 percent. A minimum referral fee of $0.30 per item applies to most categories, so very cheap items still pay at least $0.30.
How is the FBA fulfillment fee determined?
Amazon first classifies your product into a size tier (such as small standard, large standard or oversize) using its dimensions and weight. The fulfillment fee is then a flat amount per unit based on that tier and the shipping weight, which is the greater of the unit weight and the dimensional weight (length ร width ร height divided by 139).
What is a good profit margin for Amazon FBA?
Many experienced FBA sellers aim for a net profit margin of at least 15 to 30 percent after all Amazon fees and product costs, leaving room for advertising, returns and price changes. A margin below 10 percent is fragile because a single fee increase or a wave of returns can erase the profit, and a negative margin means you lose money on every sale.
What is break-even price on Amazon?
The break-even price is the lowest sale price at which your net profit is exactly zero after the referral fee, the FBA fulfillment fee, storage and your own costs. Selling above the break-even price produces a profit; selling below it produces a loss. This calculator solves for it directly from your costs and referral rate.
Are these Amazon FBA fees exact?
The rates here are estimates based on the Amazon US 2025 fee schedule and are intended for planning. Amazon updates its referral, fulfillment and storage fees periodically and adds surcharges for some products. Both the referral rate and the FBA fulfillment fee are editable in this tool, so you can match the exact figures from your Seller Central account or the current fee schedule.
