Why the Counts Are Accurate — and When They Are Not
Most PDFs store an invisible text layer behind the visible page, the same text you can select and copy in a PDF reader. A scanned document, however, is really a picture of a page and has no text layer, so there is nothing to count — the tool detects this and lets you know the file needs OCR (optical character recognition) to become searchable text first. Reading time is based on an average silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute, and speaking time on about 130 words per minute. These are averages, so your own pace may be a little faster or slower.
Does it count words in headers, footers and footnotes?
Yes. Any text stored in the PDF's text layer is counted, including headers, footers, footnotes, captions and text inside tables. Text that only exists as part of an image is not counted, because it is not real text.
Is there a page or file-size limit?
There is no fixed limit. Because everything happens in your browser, the only practical limit is your device's memory. Very large PDFs simply take a little longer to read, and a progress bar shows how far along the analysis is.
Can it count words in a password-protected PDF?
An encrypted or password-protected PDF cannot be read directly, and the tool will tell you when a file is protected. Remove the protection first — for example with your PDF reader's Print to PDF or Save a copy option — then open the unlocked file.
