About Charades Generator

The Charades Generator gives you an endless supply of random charades ideas and acting prompts, sorted by difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard) and by category — movies, animals, actions, famous people, jobs, songs and more. Each word appears on a tap-to-reveal secret card so only the actor sees it, a built-in countdown timer keeps every round fair, and a two-team scoreboard tallies the points for you. It runs entirely in your browser, so it is perfect for parties, classrooms, family game night and road trips with a single phone.

How to Use the Charades Generator

  1. Set the difficulty: Choose Easy, Medium, Hard, or Mixed. The whole tool recolors to match — green for easy, red for hard.
  2. Pick a category and round length: Filter to movies, animals, actions and more, and set how many seconds each round should last (30 to 120).
  3. Pass the phone to the actor: Tap the secret card to reveal a random word that only the actor can see.
  4. Act it out: The actor mimes the word silently while their team guesses. Watch the countdown ring drain from green to red.
  5. Score and switch: Tap Got It for a correct guess (+1 point) or Skip to move on. When the timer buzzes, the scoreboard updates and it is the next team's turn.

What Are Good Charades Words?

The Rules of Charades

Charades is a classic guessing game where one player acts out a word or phrase using only body language while their team races to guess it before time runs out. The core rules are simple:

  • No talking, no sounds, no mouthing words. The actor communicates with gestures only.
  • No pointing at objects in the room that give the answer away.
  • Use common signals to help: hold up fingers for the number of words, then for which word you are acting; tug your ear for "sounds like."
  • Beat the clock. A correct guess before the timer ends scores a point for the team.
  • Take turns. Teams alternate actors and rounds; the highest score at the end wins.

Common Charades Gestures

  • Number of words: hold up that many fingers.
  • Syllables: tap that many fingers on your forearm.
  • "Sounds like": cup a hand behind your ear.
  • "The whole thing": sweep your arms in a big circle.
  • Movie: mime cranking an old film camera. Song: pretend to sing.

Why Use This Charades Generator?

  • Signature countdown ring — a big animated timer everyone can read across the room, shifting green → amber → red as the seconds tick down.
  • Tap-to-reveal secret card — only the actor sees the word, so you can play with a single shared phone.
  • Automatic scoreboard — Got It and Skip taps keep the score for you, and team names are editable.
  • Never repeats — the deck cycles through every word in your selection before any word comes back.
  • Free and private — no sign up, no app, and everything stays in your browser.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the charades generator work?

Choose a difficulty and category, then the generator instantly draws a random charades word from a large curated deck. The word appears on a tap-to-reveal card so only the actor sees it. Start the countdown timer, act the word out, and tap Got It or Skip. The deck does not repeat a word until you have seen every word in the current selection.

What are good charades words?

Good charades words are things that are fun to act out. Easy ones include dog, pizza, swimming and superhero. Medium words include astronaut, riding a bike and Jurassic Park. Hard words include synchronized swimming, escargot and conducting an orchestra. This tool sorts every word into Easy, Medium and Hard so you can match the challenge to your players.

How long should a charades round be?

A charades round is usually 60 to 90 seconds. Shorter rounds of 30 to 45 seconds keep the game fast and energetic for kids, while 90 to 120 seconds gives players more time for harder words. You can set the round length in this tool before you start, and the countdown ring shows the time remaining at a glance.

What are the rules of charades?

One player acts out a word or phrase using only gestures and body language, with no talking, pointing at objects, or mouthing words. Their team tries to guess before the timer runs out. A correct guess scores a point. Common gestures signal the category and the number of words and syllables. Teams take turns, and the team with the most points at the end wins.

Is the charades generator free and private?

Yes, it is completely free with no sign up. Every word, your timer and your team scores are handled entirely in your own browser using local storage, so nothing is uploaded to a server. Clearing your browser data resets your scores and word history.

Can I play charades with just one phone?

Yes. The tap-to-reveal secret card is designed for single-device play: pass one phone to the actor, who taps to see the word while everyone else looks away. After acting, the actor taps Got It or Skip and hands the phone to the next player. No app or extra equipment is needed.
