About Fantasy Name Generator

The Fantasy Name Generator forges original character names for eight fantasy races — elves, dwarves, orcs, dragons, humans, halflings, fairies and demons — sorted by gender and name length. Rather than shuffling a fixed list, it builds each name from authentic syllable pools, so it can produce a near-endless variety of names that still sound right for their race. Every result comes with a pronunciation guide, an optional epic epithet or clan surname, and a one-line backstory — then you can flip each card for the full lore and save your favourites to a private adventuring party.

How to Use the Fantasy Name Generator

  1. Choose a race: Pick Elf, Dwarf, Orc, Dragon, Human, Halfling, Fairy or Demon — or leave it on Any to blend every race together.
  2. Set gender and length: Choose Male, Female or Any, and a name length of Short, Medium or Long for punchy or grand names.
  3. Add an epithet (optional): Keep the Add epithet / clan surname switch on to turn each first name into a full title such as "Thora Ironfist" or "Aelandor the Everdusk".
  4. Forge: Click Forge Names for a fresh set, Forge more to keep going, or Surprise Me for a random race and gender.
  5. Flip & save: Tap a card to reveal its pronunciation, full title and backstory. Tap the star (⭐) to recruit a name to your adventuring party, or the dice (🎲) to reforge just that one.

What Makes This Fantasy Name Generator Different

  • Procedural rune forge: Names are assembled from race-specific syllables, so you are not limited to a short list — every click can produce something new.
  • Pronunciation on every card: Because each name is built from syllable pieces, the tool shows you exactly how to say it (for example, Ael·an·dor).
  • Epithets, surnames and lore: Add heroic titles or clan surnames and get an instant one-line backstory to spark your character's story.
  • Your adventuring party: Save favourites privately in your own browser and copy the whole party to share with your table.
  • Private by design: Everything is generated in your browser — nothing you do is ever sent to a server.

Fantasy Naming by Race

Each fantasy race has its own sound. These conventions are why an elf name feels graceful while an orc name feels harsh, even before you know its meaning:

🧝 ElvesFlowing, musical names full of soft L, R and TH sounds and airy vowels — Aelandor, Sylwen, Thalorin.
🪓 DwarvesShort, sturdy, consonant-heavy names with Norse roots — Thrainin, Balgrim, Durdin.
👹 OrcsHarsh, guttural names full of hard G, K and Z sounds — Grishnak, Morzog, Uggash.
🐉 DragonsAncient, sibilant, drawn-out names that hiss and roll — Vexaxis, Zirthys, Pyromora.
⚔️ HumansFamiliar medieval names of Anglo-Saxon flavour — Aldric, Brannmund, Elowen.
🌿 HalflingsWarm, homely, playful names rooted in nature and food — Pippin, Daisy, Merribo.
🧚 FairiesLight, twinkling names built from dew, glimmer and petals — Pixiewing, Glimmerella, Twila.
😈 DemonsDark, sharp, otherworldly names with X, Z and TH — Azgoth, Baelrath, Morithra.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the fantasy name generator work?

Choose a race, gender and name length, then click Forge Names. Instead of drawing from a fixed list, the generator builds original names from authentic syllable pools for each race, so it can create a near-endless variety of names. Every result comes with a pronunciation, an optional epithet or clan surname, and a short backstory.

What races can I generate names for?

You can generate names for elves, dwarves, orcs, dragons, humans, halflings, fairies and demons. Each race has its own sound and style, from the flowing, musical names of elves to the harsh, guttural names of orcs and the ancient, sibilant names of dragons. Choose Any to blend all of the races together.

Are these names free to use for D&D and my stories?

Yes. The names are generated fresh for you and are free to use for anything, including Dungeons & Dragons characters, tabletop RPG NPCs, video game avatars, gamertags, novels, short stories and general worldbuilding. There is no sign-up and no cost.

What is an epithet or clan surname?

An epithet is a heroic title such as "the Everdusk" or "Scourge of the Wastes", while a clan surname is a compound name such as "Ironfist" or "Moonwhisper". Turning on the epithet option adds one of these to each name, turning a first name into a full, memorable character name.

How do I save the names I like?

Tap the star icon on any name card to add it to your adventuring party. Your party is saved privately in your own browser, so your favourite names are still there when you come back. You can copy the whole party to share, or clear it at any time.

Can I get a name with a specific length?

Yes. Use the length control to choose Short for punchy one or two syllable names, Medium for a balanced feel, or Long for grand, multi-syllable names. Leave it on Any to get a natural mix of lengths.
