What is a journal prompt?
A journal prompt is a short question or statement that gives your writing a starting point — for example, “What are you grateful for today?” or “What belief have you outgrown this year?” Prompts are especially useful when you want to journal but are staring at a blank page. A good prompt gently steers your reflection toward a particular theme, so instead of wondering what to write, you can spend your energy actually reflecting.
How to use the journal prompt generator
- Choose a theme. Tap one of the twelve themes — such as Gratitude, Growth, Creativity, Self-Discovery or Shadow Work. The whole tool recolors to match, and a prompt for that theme appears.
- Set the depth. Use the Depth dial to pick Light, Deep or Profound prompts, or leave it on Any. Each prompt shows its depth with one, two or three dots, so you always know what you are getting into.
- Write your answer. Tap Answer this and write in the Reflection Pad. Watch the word count grow, tap Go Deeper for a follow-up question, and start the 3, 5 or 10 minute writing timer for a focused free-write.
- Save it. Tap Save to my journal to keep your entry. Come back tomorrow for a new Prompt of the Day, and copy or print your journal whenever you like.
The signature Depth dial
Most prompt generators treat every question the same. This one sorts each prompt by how deep it goes, so you can match your writing to your mood and the time you have:
| Depth | Best for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ● Light | A quick warm-up, low pressure, a couple of sentences | “What is the first thing you are looking forward to today?” |
| ●● Deep | Honest reflection when you have a little time to think | “What belief did you hold a year ago that you have outgrown?” |
| ●●● Profound | Vulnerable, meaningful writing about identity and values | “What emotion do you avoid, and what might it be protecting?” |
The 12 reflection themes
| Theme | Great for | Example prompt |
|---|---|---|
| 🙏 Gratitude | Noticing the good, shifting perspective | “What ordinary moment would you miss if it were gone?” |
| 🌱 Growth & Change | Learning from setbacks, tracking progress | “What is the lesson hiding inside a recent mistake?” |
| 🎨 Creativity | Play, imagination, unblocking ideas | “What would you make if no one would ever judge it?” |
| 🧭 Self-Discovery | Understanding your values and identity | “When do you feel most like your true self?” |
| 🧘 Mindfulness | Grounding in the present moment | “What is your body trying to tell you right now?” |
| 💞 Relationships | Connection, boundaries, gratitude for people | “What do you wish you could say, but have not?” |
| 🚀 Career & Purpose | Direction, meaning and motivation at work | “What does meaningful work look like to you?” |
| 🌈 Healing & Letting Go | Processing hard feelings, self-compassion | “What are you ready to forgive yourself for?” |
| ☀️ Morning Pages | Setting intentions to start the day | “What intention could guide you through today?” |
| 🌙 Evening Reflection | Winding down and reviewing the day | “What moment from today do you want to remember?” |
| 🎯 Goals & Dreams | Clarifying what you want and why | “What dream have you been too afraid to say out loud?” |
| 🌑 Shadow Work | Meeting the parts of yourself you avoid | “What do you judge in others that you fear in yourself?” |
Why journaling with prompts helps
Writing regularly about your thoughts and feelings is one of the simplest ways to process what is going on inside. Prompts remove the friction of deciding what to write, so you can start faster and go further. Naming an emotion in words can take some of its charge away, reflecting on your day helps you notice patterns you would otherwise miss, and revisiting old entries lets you see how much you have grown. The built-in writing timer encourages a free-write: keep your pen moving without stopping to edit, and let honest thoughts surface.
Tips for a journaling habit that sticks
- Write at the same time daily. The Prompt of the Day pairs naturally with a morning coffee or a wind-down before bed.
- Match depth to energy. On a busy day, keep the Depth dial on Light. When you have space to think, go Deep or Profound.
- Do not edit as you go. Start the timer, keep writing, and resist the urge to fix words. You can always tidy later.
- Use Go Deeper when a prompt sparks something. The follow-up question is there to help you write the paragraph you did not know you had.
- Keep what matters. Your journal lives only in this browser, so copy or print entries you want to keep forever.
Frequently asked questions
Can I write my answer on the page?
Yes. Every prompt comes with a private Reflection Pad where you can write your answer directly, with a live word count and an optional 3, 5 or 10 minute writing timer. You can save each entry to your own journal and copy or print your reflections whenever you like.
Is my journal private?
Completely. Everything you write stays only in your own browser using local storage. Your chosen theme, your drafts and your saved journal entries are never uploaded to a server, so no one else can read them. Because it is stored locally, clearing your browser data will remove your journal, so copy or print anything you want to keep.
What is the Prompt of the Day?
The Prompt of the Day is one prompt chosen from your selected theme using today's date, so it stays the same all day and is the same for everyone. It gives you a single anchor to write about each day, while the New Prompt button lets you draw as many extra prompts as you like.
What is shadow work journaling?
Shadow work is reflective writing about the parts of yourself you tend to hide, avoid or dislike — the fears, jealousies and patterns that shape you quietly. The Shadow Work theme offers gentle, non-judgmental prompts to explore these with curiosity rather than criticism. Go at your own pace, and be kind to yourself; if a prompt feels like too much, switch to a lighter theme.
Are these prompts good for beginners?
Absolutely. Set the Depth dial to Light and choose a friendly theme like Gratitude or Morning Pages. Light prompts are concrete and easy to answer in a sentence or two, which is a perfect way to build the habit before moving into deeper reflection.
