About Futoshiki Generator

Welcome to the Futoshiki Generator, an advanced puzzle creation tool that generates unique Futoshiki inequality puzzles. Futoshiki (Japanese for "inequality") is a compelling logic puzzle that challenges you to fill an N×N grid with numbers while respecting inequality constraints between adjacent cells. It combines the elegance of Latin squares with relational reasoning, creating a deeply satisfying puzzle experience.

What is Futoshiki?

Futoshiki is a number placement puzzle played on a square grid. The rules are elegantly simple:

  • Latin Square Rule: Each row and each column must contain the numbers 1 through N exactly once (where N is the grid size)
  • Inequality Rule: Some pairs of adjacent cells have inequality signs (<, >, , ) between them. The open side of the sign always faces the larger number
  • No Box Constraint: Unlike Sudoku, Futoshiki has no 3×3 box rule. The inequality signs provide the extra constraints instead

The puzzle starts with some cells pre-filled (given clues) and some inequality signs shown. Your task is to deduce the remaining numbers using logic alone — no guessing required for a well-crafted puzzle.

How to Read Inequality Signs

Understanding the inequality signs is key to solving Futoshiki. The open (wider) side of the sign always points toward the larger number:

  • Horizontal: 3 > 1 means the left cell (3) is greater than the right cell (1)
  • Horizontal: 2 < 5 means the left cell (2) is less than the right cell (5)
  • Vertical ∨: The V-shape opening faces up — the top cell is larger than the bottom cell
  • Vertical ∧: The caret opening faces down — the top cell is smaller than the bottom cell

How to Solve Futoshiki

Step 1: Start with Extremes

Look for cells that must contain 1 or N. If a cell has inequality signs on both sides pointing away from it (both neighbors must be larger), that cell must contain 1. Similarly, if both signs point toward a cell, it must contain N.

Step 2: Chain Reasoning

Follow chains of inequality signs. If you see A < B < C in a row of a 4×4 grid, then A can only be 1 or 2, B can be 2 or 3, and C can be 3 or 4. The chain length constrains possible values.

Step 3: Use Elimination

Apply standard Latin square elimination. If a row already contains 1, 3, and 5, the remaining cells must contain 2 and 4. Combine this with inequality constraints to determine exact placement.

Step 4: Use Pencil Marks

Write small candidate numbers in uncertain cells. Our interactive solver includes pencil mark mode — toggle it with the pencil button or press P. As you eliminate possibilities, erase candidates to track your progress.

Difficulty Levels Explained

  • Easy: Shows ~85% of inequality signs with ~35% of cells pre-filled. Many cells can be solved directly from the given information. Ideal for learning Futoshiki logic.
  • Medium: Shows ~60% of signs with ~20% given cells. Requires combining multiple constraints and Latin square elimination. The classic solving experience.
  • Hard: Shows ~40% of signs with ~10% given cells. Demands longer deduction chains and careful tracking of candidates across rows and columns.
  • Expert: Shows only ~25% of signs with no given numbers at all. Every digit must be deduced purely from inequality constraints and Latin square rules. A true test of logical reasoning.

Grid Sizes

  • 4×4: Quick and approachable. Great for beginners or a fast warm-up puzzle.
  • 5×5 (Classic): The standard Futoshiki size found in newspapers and puzzle books worldwide. The perfect balance of challenge and accessibility.
  • 6×6: A moderate step up. More cells and constraints mean more complex interactions to track.
  • 7×7: A substantial challenge. Large enough to require systematic candidate tracking.
  • 9×9: The largest grid available. With 81 cells and dozens of constraints, this is for experienced puzzle solvers seeking a deep logical workout.

Interactive Solver Features

  • Click-to-Fill: Select any cell and type a digit or use the on-screen numpad
  • Pencil Marks: Toggle pencil mode to add small candidate notes in cells
  • Real-time Validation: Constraint signs turn green when satisfied and red when violated, giving immediate feedback
  • Arrow Navigation: Use arrow keys to move between cells efficiently
  • Error Checking: Click Check to highlight incorrect entries
  • Timer: Track your solving time to measure improvement
  • Undo: Reverse your last move if you make a mistake
  • Show Solution: Reveal the complete answer when stuck
  • Print: Generate a clean print-friendly version for offline solving

Puzzle Seed for Sharing

Every puzzle can be reproduced by entering the same seed, grid size, and difficulty level. Share your seed with friends, classmates, or puzzle communities to solve the exact same puzzle and compare solving times. Leave the seed field empty for a completely random puzzle each time.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Futoshiki and how does it differ from Sudoku?

Futoshiki (meaning "inequality" in Japanese) is a Latin square puzzle where you fill an N×N grid so each row and column contains the numbers 1 to N exactly once. Unlike Sudoku, Futoshiki has no 3×3 box constraints. Instead, inequality signs between adjacent cells tell you which cell must contain the larger or smaller number. This makes Futoshiki more about relational logic than positional elimination.

How do I read the inequality signs in Futoshiki?

The open side of the inequality sign always faces the larger number. For horizontal signs: 3 > 1 means the left cell is larger. For vertical signs: the V-shape (∨) means the top cell is larger than the bottom, while the caret (∧) means the top cell is smaller. Not all adjacent cell pairs have signs — you must deduce some relationships from the Latin square rules.

What do the difficulty levels mean in Futoshiki?

Easy puzzles show about 85% of all inequality constraints and pre-fill about 35% of cells. Medium shows 60% of constraints with 20% given. Hard shows 40% with 10% given. Expert shows only 25% of constraints with no given numbers — a true test of logical reasoning.

Can I share a specific Futoshiki puzzle with someone?

Yes! Enter any number or text in the Puzzle Seed field. The same seed with the same grid size and difficulty always generates the identical puzzle. Share the seed, size, and difficulty with friends to compete on solving times.

What grid sizes are available for Futoshiki?

This generator supports five grid sizes: 4×4 (great for beginners), 5×5 (the classic size found in newspapers), 6×6 and 7×7 (intermediate challenges), and 9×9 (a large grid for experienced solvers).
