What is DPS?

DPS stands for Damage Per Second. It is the most widely used metric in gaming to measure how quickly a weapon or ability can deal damage over time. Higher DPS means you eliminate enemies faster, making it essential for competitive play, raid optimization, and build theorycrafting.

How DPS is Calculated

Raw DPS Formula

The simplest DPS calculation multiplies damage per shot by the number of shots fired each second:

Raw DPS = Base Damage × Fire Rate

For example, a weapon dealing 30 damage at 10 shots/sec has a Raw DPS of 300.

Sustained DPS Formula

Sustained DPS accounts for the reload penalty by considering the full fire-reload cycle:

Sustained DPS = (Base Damage × Magazine Size) ÷ (Magazine Size ÷ Fire Rate + Reload Time)

A weapon with 30 damage, 30-round mag, 10 RPS, and 2.1s reload: (30 × 30) ÷ (3.0 + 2.1) = 900 ÷ 5.1 ≈ 176.47 sustained DPS.

Effective DPS with Critical Hits

To factor in critical hits, multiply Sustained DPS by the expected damage modifier:

Effective DPS = Sustained DPS × [(1 - Crit%) + (Crit% × Crit Multiplier)]

With 5% crit chance and 1.5× multiplier: modifier = 0.95 + (0.05 × 1.5) = 1.025, adding 2.5% average damage.

DPS Optimization Tips

1. Magazine Size vs Reload Speed

Larger magazines reduce reload frequency, boosting sustained DPS. However, fast-reload weapons may have comparable sustained DPS with better burst flexibility. Compare both using this calculator.

2. The Crit Ceiling

Increasing crit chance from 5% to 15% with a 2× multiplier adds 10% more average DPS. In many games, crit-focused builds can dramatically outperform raw damage builds at high skill levels.

3. Headshot vs Body Shot

Headshot multipliers reward accuracy. A 2× headshot multiplier effectively doubles your DPS if every shot lands. Use the headshot DPS value to understand the skill-ceiling potential of a weapon.

4. TTK Breakpoints

In competitive games, TTK breakpoints matter more than raw DPS. A weapon that kills in 4 shots vs 5 shots can mean the difference between winning and losing a duel, even if the overall DPS numbers are similar.

5. Burst vs Sustained Engagements

For quick peek-and-shoot playstyles, burst DPS matters most. For holding angles or extended firefights, sustained DPS is the key metric. Choose weapons based on your playstyle.
