Joint Sand Formula

Joint sand is calculated from the size of each paver and the width of the gaps between them. For each paver, the calculator multiplies the sum of the paver's length and width by the joint width and by the paver's thickness, all in inches. This gives the cubic inches of joint space per paver. It then multiplies that by the number of pavers needed before waste, converts cubic inches to cubic feet, and converts cubic feet to pounds at 100 lb per cubic foot. The result is rounded up to whole 50 lb bags.

Joint width defaults to 0.125 inch (1/8 inch) and can be changed under Advanced Options.

Laying Patterns Explained

Running Bond (~5% waste) — The most popular pattern. Pavers are laid in staggered rows like a brick wall. Easy to install and structurally strong.
Herringbone (~10% waste) — Pavers interlock at 45° or 90° angles, creating a zigzag pattern. Excellent for driveways as it resists shifting under load.
Basketweave (~5% waste) — Pairs of pavers alternate between horizontal and vertical orientation. Creates a woven look ideal for patios and courtyards.
Stacked Bond (~2% waste) — Pavers align in straight rows and columns. Modern, clean look but less interlocking strength. Best for patios and decorative areas.

Base Preparation Guide

Proper base preparation is crucial for long-lasting paver installations. The typical installation layers from bottom to top:

Compacted Soil — Excavate to the required depth and compact the native soil with a plate compactor.
Gravel Base (4–8″) — Use crushed stone (¾″ minus) and compact in 2-inch lifts. Use 4 inches for patios and 6–8 inches for driveways.
Bedding Sand (1″) — Spread coarse concrete sand and screed to a uniform 1-inch depth. Do not compact before laying pavers.
Pavers — Lay pavers in your chosen pattern, maintaining consistent joint spacing.
Joint Sand — Sweep polymeric sand into joints and mist with water to activate the binding agent.
