Wallpaper Calculator 🎨
Calculate the number of wallpaper rolls needed for a room, considering wall dimensions, pattern repeat, and waste allowance for accurate material estimation.
About Wallpaper Calculator 🎨
How to Use the Wallpaper Calculator
Measure your wall height and the total perimeter (or combined width of all walls you want to cover). Enter your wallpaper roll dimensions from the product label. If your wallpaper has a repeating pattern, enter the pattern repeat distance. The calculator determines how many vertical strips (drops) fit per roll and calculates the total rolls needed, including waste allowance.
Measuring Your Walls
- Wall Height: Measure from floor to ceiling (or from baseboard to crown molding if applicable).
- Total Width: Add up the width of all walls to be covered, or measure the room perimeter and subtract unwanted walls.
- Doors & Windows: Measure the width and height of each door and window, multiply to get area, then sum all areas.
- Pattern Repeat: Check the wallpaper label or product description for the repeat distance (vertical measurement).
Understanding Pattern Repeat
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before a wallpaper design repeats itself. When installing wallpaper with a pattern, adjacent strips must be aligned so the design matches perfectly. This matching requirement means each strip may need extra length, reducing the number of usable drops per roll. Wallpapers with larger pattern repeats require more material. Solid colors and random patterns have zero repeat.
Standard Wallpaper Roll Sizes
Region | Typical Width | Typical Length | Coverage |
---|---|---|---|
US (American) | 20.5 or 21 inches | 33 feet (11 yards) | ~56-58 ft² |
European (Euro) | 53 cm (0.53 m) | 10 meters | ~5.3 m² |
UK | 21 inches | 33 feet | ~57 ft² |
Commercial | 27 or 54 inches | 27-60 feet | Varies widely |
Professional Installation Tips
- Always order 10-15% extra material—wallpaper from the same batch ensures color consistency.
- Order all rolls at once from the same dye lot to avoid slight color variations between batches.
- For complex patterns or first-time installers, consider ordering an extra roll for practice and mistakes.
- Keep leftover wallpaper for future repairs—discontinued patterns can be impossible to match later.
- Some patterns require "drop match" (offset pattern alignment), which may increase waste—check product specifications.
