About Golf Handicap Calculator
What is a Golf Handicap Index?
A Golf Handicap Index is a numerical measure of a golfer's demonstrated ability, calculated from recent score differentials using the World Handicap System (WHS). It allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly by providing equitable stroke allowances. The system was unified globally in 2020, replacing six separate handicapping systems used around the world.
How the World Handicap System Works
The WHS calculates your Handicap Index by analyzing your most recent rounds (up to 20). Rather than using raw scores, it converts each round into a Score Differential that accounts for course difficulty. The system then selects your best differentials, averages them, and applies any necessary adjustments.
Key principles of the WHS include:
- Portability — Your Handicap Index is valid at any course worldwide
- Inclusivity — Maximum index of 54.0 welcomes beginners
- Course neutrality — Score Differentials normalize for course difficulty
- Responsiveness — Your index updates after each round entered
Score Differential Formula
Each round is converted to a Score Differential using this formula:
Where 113 is the standard Slope Rating for a course of average difficulty, Slope Rating (55-155) measures how much harder the course is for a bogey golfer vs. a scratch golfer, and Course Rating is the expected score for a scratch golfer.
How Many Differentials Are Used?
The number of differentials used and any adjustments depend on how many scores you have:
| Scores Available | Differentials Used | Adjustment |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | Lowest 1 | -2.0 |
| 4 | Lowest 1 | -1.0 |
| 5 | Lowest 1 | 0 |
| 6 | Lowest 2 | -1.0 |
| 7-8 | Lowest 2 | 0 |
| 9-11 | Lowest 3 | 0 |
| 12-14 | Lowest 4 | 0 |
| 15-16 | Lowest 5 | 0 |
| 17-18 | Lowest 6 | 0 |
| 19 | Lowest 7 | 0 |
| 20 | Lowest 8 | 0 |
Understanding Course Handicap
Your Handicap Index is portable, but to play at a specific course, you convert it to a Course Handicap:
The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. This tells you how many strokes you receive (or give) on that particular course.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Golf Handicap Index?
A Golf Handicap Index is a numerical measure of a golfer's demonstrated ability, calculated from recent score differentials using the World Handicap System (WHS). It allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly by providing equitable stroke allowances.
How many rounds do I need to get a handicap?
You need a minimum of 3 eighteen-hole scores (or equivalent 9-hole rounds combined into 18-hole scores) to establish a WHS Handicap Index. The calculation becomes more accurate as you add more rounds, up to 20.
What is the difference between Handicap Index and Course Handicap?
Handicap Index is your portable measure of ability that travels with you. Course Handicap adjusts your Handicap Index for the specific difficulty of a course using its Slope Rating and Course Rating. The formula is: Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par).
What is a Score Differential?
A Score Differential measures your performance relative to the difficulty of the course. It is calculated as (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating). The standard Slope Rating of 113 normalizes the difficulty across different courses.
What is the maximum Handicap Index?
The maximum Handicap Index under the World Handicap System is 54.0 for all golfers, regardless of gender. This replaced the previous limits of 36.4 for men and 40.4 for women, making the system more inclusive for beginners.
