About Bowling Score Calculator
How Bowling Scoring Works
Bowling uses a unique scoring system across 10 frames. Each frame gives you up to two rolls to knock down 10 pins. Your score is the total pins knocked down, plus bonuses earned from strikes and spares. The maximum possible score is 300, known as a perfect game.
At a Glance
Bowling Score Calculator scores a ten-pin bowling game from the pins knocked down on each roll. It applies strike, spare and 10th frame bonus rules, then shows the total, a performance rating and game statistics.
| Feature | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Roll-by-roll entry | Press a pin-count button for each roll. The scorecard tracks frames, marks strikes (X) and spares (/), and shows running totals. Undo and Reset are available. | Scoring a game as you bowl it |
| Strike and spare rules | A strike scores 10 plus the next two rolls, a spare 10 plus the next roll, and an open frame just the pins down. | Checking why a frame scored what it did |
| 10th frame | A strike earns two bonus rolls and a spare earns one. The bonus rolls only complete the 10th frame, which scores at most 30. | Games that end on a strike or spare |

Strikes
A strike (marked X) is when all 10 pins are knocked down on the first roll of a frame. The frame score is 10 plus the total pins from the next two rolls as a bonus. For example: Strike, then 7 and 2 on the next frame = 10 + 7 + 2 = 19 points for the strike frame.
Spares
A spare (marked /) is when all remaining pins are knocked down on the second roll. The frame score is 10 plus the pins from the next one roll as a bonus. For example: 6 then spare (4 remaining pins), then first ball of next frame is 8 = 10 + 8 = 18 points for the spare frame.
Open Frames
An open frame is when you don't knock down all 10 pins in two rolls. The frame score is simply the total pins knocked down — no bonus. For example: 5 then 3 = 8 points.
The 10th Frame
The 10th frame is special. If you throw a strike, you get two bonus rolls. If you get a spare, you get one bonus roll. These extra rolls complete the 10th frame scoring only — they don't earn additional bonuses. The maximum 10th frame score is 30 (three strikes).

Frequently Asked Questions
How is a bowling score calculated?
A bowling score is calculated by adding the pins knocked down in each frame plus bonuses. A strike (all 10 pins on the first roll) earns 10 plus the next two rolls as a bonus. A spare (all 10 pins in two rolls) earns 10 plus the next one roll as a bonus. An open frame scores only the pins knocked down. The maximum score is 300 (a perfect game of 12 consecutive strikes).
What is a strike in bowling?
A strike occurs when you knock down all 10 pins with your first ball in a frame. It is marked with an X on the scorecard. The score for a strike frame is 10 plus the total pins from your next two rolls. For example, if you bowl a strike followed by 7 and 2, that strike frame scores 10 + 7 + 2 = 19.
What is a spare in bowling?
A spare occurs when you knock down all 10 remaining pins with your second ball in a frame. It is marked with a / on the scorecard. The score for a spare frame is 10 plus the pins from your next one roll. For example, if you bowl 7 then knock down the remaining 3 (spare), and your next roll is 5, that spare frame scores 10 + 5 = 15.
How does the 10th frame work in bowling?
The 10th frame is special because you can earn up to three rolls. If you throw a strike on your first ball, you get two more bonus balls. If you get a spare (knock down all pins in two balls), you get one more bonus ball. These extra balls are used only to complete the scoring of the 10th frame. If you do not strike or spare, you only get two balls. The maximum 10th frame score is 30 (three strikes).
What is a perfect game in bowling?
A perfect game in bowling is a score of 300, achieved by throwing 12 consecutive strikes (one in each of the first 9 frames, plus three in the 10th frame). Each of the first 9 frames scores 30 points (10 + 10 + 10), and the 10th frame scores 30 (10 + 10 + 10), totaling 300. A perfect game is considered one of the most impressive achievements in bowling.
