About Candle Wax & Fragrance Oil Calculator

Welcome to the Candle Wax & Fragrance Oil Calculator, an essential tool for candle makers of all skill levels. Whether you are a beginner learning the craft or an experienced artisan scaling up production, this calculator helps you determine the exact amounts of wax and fragrance oil needed for any container size.

Why Use a Candle Wax Calculator?

Accurate measurements are crucial in candle making. Too much fragrance oil can cause poor burn quality, sweating, or even safety hazards. Too little means a weak scent throw. This calculator takes the guesswork out of the equation:

Understanding Wax Types and Their Properties

Different waxes behave differently in candle making. Here is a guide to the most common types:

Soy Wax

Made from soybean oil, soy wax is a popular natural choice. It burns cleaner than paraffin and has excellent scent throw. Recommended fragrance load: 6-10%. Soy wax is softer and may require proper wick sizing for optimal burn.

Paraffin Wax

A petroleum-based wax that has been used for decades. It holds fragrance exceptionally well (6-12% load) and produces vibrant colors. Paraffin has a higher melting point and creates a more traditional candle texture.

Coconut Wax

A luxurious, eco-friendly option made from coconut oil. It has a creamy texture and excellent cold and hot throw. Recommended fragrance load: 6-10%. Often blended with other waxes for improved performance.

Beeswax

A natural wax produced by honey bees. It has a naturally sweet honey scent and purifies air while burning. Lower fragrance capacity (3-6%) due to its natural properties. Best for those wanting a more natural candle experience.

Palm Wax

Creates beautiful crystalline patterns when cooled. Holds fragrance well (6-10%) and has a harder texture. Ensure you source sustainable, RSPO-certified palm wax.

Fragrance Load Explained

Fragrance load (also called fragrance percentage) is the ratio of fragrance oil to the total weight of wax and fragrance. For example:

Going above the recommended fragrance load can cause:

Recommended Fragrance Loads by Wax Type

Wax Type Minimum % Maximum % Recommended %
Soy Wax 6% 10% 8%
Paraffin Wax 6% 12% 9%
Coconut Wax 6% 10% 8%
Beeswax 3% 6% 5%
Palm Wax 6% 10% 8%

How to Measure Your Container

Cylinder/Round Containers

Measure the inside diameter (the widest point across the opening) and the height from the bottom to where you want the wax to fill (usually leaving 0.5-1 inch of headspace). Use a ruler or measuring tape for accuracy.

Square/Rectangular Containers

Measure the inside length, width, and height. The calculator will compute the volume automatically.

Knowing the Volume

If your container has a labeled capacity (like an 8 oz jar), you can use the "Custom Volume" option and enter that value directly. Remember that container capacity in fluid ounces is different from wax weight in ounces.

The 86% Fill Factor

This calculator automatically applies an 86% fill factor to account for:

Tips for Candle Making Success

Frequently Asked Questions

How much wax do I need for my candle container?

The amount of wax depends on your container size and shape. For a cylinder container, measure the diameter and height. For example, a 3-inch diameter by 4-inch tall container holds about 12 fl oz and requires approximately 5-6 oz of wax. Use this calculator with your exact dimensions for precise measurements.

What is the recommended fragrance oil percentage for candles?

The recommended fragrance load varies by wax type. Soy wax typically handles 6-10%, paraffin 6-12%, coconut wax 6-10%, beeswax 3-6%, and palm wax 6-10%. Exceeding these limits can cause issues like fragrance oil sweating, poor burn quality, or even safety hazards.

What is fragrance load in candle making?

Fragrance load refers to the percentage of fragrance oil added to the total wax weight. For example, an 8% fragrance load means 8 grams of fragrance oil per 100 grams of total mixture. This percentage affects how strongly your candle will smell when burning (hot throw) and when unlit (cold throw).

Why should I leave headspace in my candle container?

Leaving about 0.5-1 inch of headspace at the top of your container is important for safety and aesthetics. It prevents the flame from getting too close to the container edge, allows proper air circulation for optimal burning, and gives room to trim the wick. This calculator automatically accounts for an 86% fill factor.

How do I convert between ounces and grams for candle making?

1 ounce equals approximately 28.35 grams. This calculator provides automatic conversion between ounces (oz), grams (g), and pounds (lb), so you can work in whichever unit is most convenient for your scale and recipes.

What is the difference between wax weight and container volume?

Container volume (measured in fluid ounces or milliliters) refers to how much space the container can hold. Wax weight (measured in ounces or grams) is how much the wax actually weighs. Since wax is less dense than water, a container that holds 8 fl oz of water will only need about 4-5 oz of wax by weight to fill it.
