What is a Calendar?
A calendar is a system for organizing days into weeks, months, and years. The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, is the most widely used civil calendar today. It divides the year into 12 months with varying lengths (28-31 days) and includes leap years to align with Earth's orbital period around the sun.

Understanding Leap Years
A leap year is a year with 366 days (instead of the usual 365), where February has 29 days instead of 28. Leap years occur to synchronize the calendar year with the astronomical year (Earth's orbit around the sun takes approximately 365.25 days).
Leap Year Rules
- Years divisible by 4 are leap years
- Exception: Years divisible by 100 are NOT leap years
- Exception to exception: Years divisible by 400 ARE leap years
Examples: 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4). 1900 was NOT a leap year (divisible by 100 but not 400). 2000 was a leap year (divisible by 400).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a calendar?
A calendar is a system for organizing days, weeks, and months of a year. The Gregorian calendar, used worldwide today, divides the year into 12 months with varying numbers of days (28-31). Calendars help track time, plan events, observe holidays, and coordinate activities.
Why do some years have 366 days?
Years with 366 days are called leap years. They occur nearly every 4 years to account for the fact that Earth's orbit around the sun takes approximately 365.25 days. The extra day is added as February 29. A year is a leap year if it's divisible by 4, except for years divisible by 100 (unless also divisible by 400).
How many weeks are in a year?
A year contains approximately 52 weeks plus 1 or 2 extra days. A regular year has 365 days (52 weeks and 1 day), while a leap year has 366 days (52 weeks and 2 days). This is why the same date falls on a different day of the week each year.
What is the difference between a monthly and yearly calendar?
A monthly calendar shows all days within a single month in detail, making it ideal for daily planning and scheduling. A yearly calendar displays all 12 months at once, providing a big-picture view useful for long-term planning, tracking holidays, and seeing the entire year's layout.
When does the week start - Sunday or Monday?
This varies by region and culture. In the United States, Canada, and some Asian countries, the week traditionally starts on Sunday. In most of Europe, the UK, and according to ISO 8601 international standard, the week begins on Monday. Our calendar uses Sunday as the first day of the week.
