How to Use the Tent Footprint Size Calculator

1. Enter the tent floor dimensions. Enter the tent floor length and width from the manufacturer specs, your old groundsheet, or a direct measurement.
2. Choose the setback per side. Enter how far the footprint should sit inside the tent edge. A common starting point is 1.5 to 3 inches, or about 4 to 8 cm, per side.
3. Add edge allowance if making your own. If you are cutting and hemming fabric, enter the amount you need to fold or bind each edge. Use 0 if you are buying a finished footprint.
4. Calculate and review the sketch. Click Calculate to see the finished footprint size, cut blank size, area coverage, and the visual inset diagram.

Tent Footprint Size Formula

A footprint should usually be slightly smaller than the tent floor. The same setback is removed from both ends of the length and both sides of the width.
