About Speedrun Split Timer

The Speedrun Split Timer is a free online timer built for speedrunners. Break any run into splits — levels, bosses, checkpoints, or laps — and time each one with millisecond precision. As you play, the timer shows whether you are ahead or behind your personal best (PB) at every split, highlights gold splits (your best-ever segments), and adds them up into your Sum of Best. Your splits and records are saved in your browser, so the tool works offline with no download or account.

What Is a Speedrun Split Timer?

A split timer is the essential tool of speedrunning. Instead of just measuring your total time, it divides a run into named segments and records the moment you reach each one. That lets you compare your current attempt against your best run segment by segment, so you know exactly where you are gaining or losing time in real time — not just at the finish line. This is the same core workflow used by popular desktop timers, rebuilt to run instantly in your browser on desktop or mobile.

How the Comparison Works

Every split is measured two ways, and both matter:

  • Cumulative time — the total elapsed time when you hit the split. This is compared to your PB's cumulative time at the same split to produce the green (ahead) or red (behind) delta.
  • Segment time — how long that single segment took on its own. This is compared to your gold split, the fastest you have ever completed that segment, in any run.

Because a delta is cumulative, being +2.0 seconds at a split means your whole run so far is two seconds slower than your PB — a lost segment early on follows you to the end unless you make it back.

Speedrunning Terms Explained

🎯 PB (Personal Best)

Your fastest complete run. The timer stores your PB's time at each split and compares every attempt against it.

⭐ Gold Split

Also called a best segment: the fastest you have ever finished one specific segment, regardless of how that run ended.

🧮 Sum of Best

The total of every gold split — a theoretical "perfect run" stitched from your best segments. Almost always faster than your PB.

💾 Possible Time Save

Your PB minus your Sum of Best: how much time you could still save if you nailed every segment in one run.

📈 Delta

The +/- difference between your current time and your PB at a split. Negative and green means you are ahead of pace.

⏭️ Skip & Undo

Skip a split you missed without recording a time, or undo the last split if you pressed it by mistake.

How to Use the Speedrun Split Timer

  1. Build your run: Enter a run title and category, then list your splits. Optionally type a PB time (like 1:24.50) for each split so the timer can compare against it from your very first attempt.
  2. Start timing: Click Start Timer, then press the green Split button or the Space bar every time you reach a checkpoint.
  3. Read your deltas: Each split turns green when you are ahead of your PB and red when you are behind. A ★ GOLD tag appears whenever you set a new best segment.
  4. Finish and save: When the last split is hit, the run summary shows your final time, comparison to your old PB, gold count, and a per-segment chart. A faster run is saved automatically as your new PB.

Why Use This Timer?

  • Offline & private: Everything runs in your browser. Your splits, PB, and gold segments are saved with local storage and never uploaded to a server.
  • No install: No download, no account — open the page and run. Ideal for console runners, mobile games, and quick practice sessions.
  • Practice-friendly: The Sum of Best and possible time save show you exactly which segments are holding your PB back, so you know what to practice.
  • Shareable: Export your splits as JSON or copy a share link that pre-loads your run title and split names for someone else.

Tips for Faster Runs

  • Split consistently. Always split at the exact same trigger (a loading screen, a boss's death, crossing a line) so your segment times are comparable between runs.
  • Chase golds, not just PBs. A run full of gold splits that ended badly still teaches you that a faster PB is possible — your Sum of Best proves it.
  • Watch early deltas. Time lost in the first segments compounds. If you are behind early, focus practice there for the biggest gains.
  • Keep categories separate. Give each category (Any%, 100%, glitchless) its own title so their PBs and golds do not mix.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a speedrun split timer?

A speedrun split timer breaks a run into segments called splits and records the time at each one. It compares your live times to your personal best so you can instantly see whether you are ahead or behind pace, and it tracks your best-ever time for each individual segment.

What are gold splits?

A gold split, also called a best segment, is the fastest time you have ever achieved for one specific segment of your run, regardless of how the rest of that attempt went. Adding up every gold split gives your Sum of Best: the theoretical best time you could achieve if you played every segment perfectly in a single run.

What is Sum of Best?

Sum of Best is the total of all your gold (best-ever) segment times. It represents a perfect run stitched together from your best individual segments and is almost always faster than your personal best, showing how much time you could still save.

Does the timer save my splits and records?

Yes. Your run setup, personal best, and gold segments are saved in your browser using local storage, so they persist between visits on the same device. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and the timer keeps working even when you are offline. Clearing your browser data or using private/incognito mode will remove the saved records.

What keyboard shortcuts does the timer support?

Press the Space bar to split, U or Backspace to undo the last split, K to skip a split, and P to pause or resume. The on-screen buttons perform the same actions if you prefer a mouse or touch.

Is this split timer free?

Yes, the Speedrun Split Timer is completely free, works in any modern browser on desktop or mobile, and requires no download, installation, or account.
