What Is a 2-Stroke Fuel Mix?
Unlike a 4-stroke engine, a two-stroke (two-cycle) engine has no separate oil sump. Instead, the lubricating oil is mixed directly into the gasoline, so every drop of fuel also carries the oil that lubricates the piston, cylinder and crankshaft as it burns. Get the ratio right and the engine runs smoothly for years. Get it wrong and you either choke it with smoke and carbon (too much oil) or starve it of lubrication (too little oil). That's why an accurate mix matters.
2-Stroke Oil Mix Formula
The math is simple once everything is in the same unit. Convert your fuel to millilitres, then divide by the ratio number:
For example, 5 litres of gas is 5000 ml. At a 50:1 ratio: \( 5000 \div 50 = 100 \) ml of oil. To go the other way and check a mix you already made, divide the fuel by the oil you added:

32:1 vs 40:1 vs 50:1 โ Which Should I Use?
The single most important rule is to use the ratio your engine's manufacturer specifies โ it's usually printed on the fuel cap, the starter housing, or in the manual. As a general guide:
- 32:1 โ a richer, oil-heavy mix. Common for older equipment, some professional saws, and engines run hard under load. More lubrication, but more smoke.
- 40:1 โ a middle-ground ratio used by many trimmers, blowers and mid-size engines.
- 50:1 โ the most common modern ratio, specified by most current chainsaws and handheld tools that use quality two-stroke oil. Runs cleaner with less smoke.
When two ratios are both acceptable for your engine, the richer one (more oil) is the safer choice for lubrication; the leaner one runs cleaner. Never guess โ a wrong ratio can be an expensive mistake.
What Happens If the Ratio Is Wrong?
Excess smoke, oily spark plugs, carbon build-up on the piston and exhaust port, and gradual power loss. Usually not fatal, but messy and inefficient.
Inadequate lubrication leads to overheating, scored cylinder walls, and โ in the worst case โ a seized engine. This is the dangerous direction to err.
Only use oil labelled for 2-stroke / two-cycle engines. Regular car motor oil doesn't burn cleanly and will foul and damage the engine.
Mixed fuel goes off in about 30 days (longer with stabiliser). Old fuel starts hard and runs poorly โ mix only what you'll soon use.
How to Mix 2-Stroke Fuel Safely
- Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, away from flames and sparks.
- Use a clean, approved fuel container and fresh gasoline of the octane your engine requires (often 89+).
- Add the oil first, then pour in the gas โ this helps the oil blend rather than pool at the bottom.
- Close the cap and shake gently for 10โ15 seconds so the oil disperses evenly.
- Label the container with the ratio and date so you never confuse it with straight gas.

How much oil do I need for a 50:1 mix?
A 50:1 ratio means 50 parts gasoline to 1 part oil. For 1 US gallon of gas you add about 2.6 fluid ounces of oil. For 1 litre of gas you add 20 millilitres of oil. For 5 litres you add 100 millilitres.
What is the difference between 32:1, 40:1 and 50:1?
The number is how many parts of gasoline are mixed with one part of oil. 32:1 has the most oil (richest), 50:1 has the least oil (leanest) of the three. Richer mixes lubricate more but smoke more; leaner mixes run cleaner. Always use the exact ratio your engine manufacturer specifies.
How do I calculate 2-stroke oil ratio?
Divide the amount of fuel by the ratio number to get the amount of oil in the same unit. For example, 5000 ml of fuel at 50:1 needs 5000 divided by 50, which equals 100 ml of oil. To check a mix you already made, divide the fuel by the oil: 5000 ml fuel divided by 100 ml oil equals 50, so the ratio is 50:1.
What happens if the fuel-to-oil ratio is wrong?
Too much oil (a rich mix) causes excess smoke, spark-plug fouling and carbon build-up. Too little oil (a lean mix) is more dangerous: the engine is under-lubricated and can overheat, wear quickly or seize. When in doubt, follow your engine manual and never run leaner than the recommended ratio.
Can I use car engine oil in a 2-stroke engine?
No. Use oil specifically made for 2-stroke (two-cycle) engines. It is designed to burn cleanly with the fuel and lubricate as it passes through the engine. Regular motor oil is not formulated to be burned and will cause heavy deposits and damage.
Does 2-stroke fuel go bad?
Yes. Pre-mixed 2-stroke fuel typically stays usable for about 30 days, or longer with a fuel stabiliser. Old mix can separate and lose octane, causing hard starting and poor running. Mix only what you will use within a few weeks and store it in a sealed, approved container.
