About Paper Size Reference
The Paper Size Reference helps you compare ISO A-series paper, North American paper sizes such as US Letter and Legal, and custom paper dimensions. It converts each size into millimeters, centimeters, inches, points, print pixels, aspect ratio, and area, with a proportional preview that makes differences easier to see before printing or designing a document.
How to Use the Paper Size Reference
- Choose a standard size or custom size: Select A4, US Letter, Legal, Tabloid, or another preset from the paper size menu. Choose Custom size when you need to compare your own dimensions.
- Set orientation and print resolution: Pick portrait or landscape, then choose the DPI value you want for the pixel guide, such as 300 dpi for print.
- Enter custom dimensions when needed: For a custom sheet, type the width and height and choose millimeters, centimeters, or inches.
- Review dimensions and closest matches: Use the result cards to read the size in mm, cm, inches, points, pixels, aspect ratio, area, and closest standard paper sizes.
A-Series Paper Sizes
The ISO A series uses the √2 aspect ratio, so each sheet keeps the same proportions when it is folded or cut in half. A0 is defined as roughly one square meter, and each smaller size halves the area.

US Letter, Legal, and Other North American Sizes
North American office sizes are inch-based and do not follow the A-series folding ratio. This is why scaling A4 artwork to US Letter, or Letter artwork to A4, often leaves margins or requires cropping.
| Size | Millimeters | Inches | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|
US Letter |
215.9 × 279.4 mm | 8.5 × 11 in | US and Canadian office documents |
US Legal |
215.9 × 355.6 mm | 8.5 × 14 in | Contracts, legal documents, long forms |
Tabloid / Ledger |
279.4 × 431.8 mm | 11 × 17 in | Newsletters, spreads, folded booklets |
Executive |
184.15 × 266.7 mm | 7.25 × 10.5 in | Business notes and compact correspondence |
Half Letter |
139.7 × 215.9 mm | 5.5 × 8.5 in | Booklets, inserts, planner pages |
Paper Size Comparison Tips
A-series ratio: A0 through A10 use the √2 ratio, approximately 1:1.414. This makes them scale cleanly between sizes, such as A3 to A4 or A4 to A5.
Pixel dimensions: Pixel size depends on print resolution. Multiply width and height in inches by DPI. A 300 dpi file is standard for many print jobs, while 150 dpi is often enough for drafts or large posters viewed from a distance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is A4 paper size in inches?
A4 paper is 210 × 297 mm, which is approximately 8.27 × 11.69 inches. It is slightly narrower and taller than US Letter paper.
Is US Letter the same as A4?
No. US Letter is 8.5 × 11 inches, or 215.9 × 279.4 mm. A4 is 210 × 297 mm, so Letter is wider and shorter while A4 is narrower and taller.
What size is Legal paper?
US Legal paper is 8.5 × 14 inches, or 215.9 × 355.6 mm. It has the same width as US Letter but is 3 inches taller.
How do I choose pixels for print?
Multiply the paper width and height in inches by the target DPI. For example, A4 at 300 dpi is about 2480 × 3508 pixels. Use 300 dpi for most print artwork and 150 dpi for drafts.
Can I use this for custom paper sizes?
Yes. Select Custom size, enter width and height in millimeters, centimeters, or inches, and the tool will show converted dimensions, pixel size, aspect ratio, area, and the closest standard paper sizes.
