Click every button, roll the wheel and move the mouse in circles; anything that does not light up, or double-clicks, is named in the report.
About Mouse Test
This mouse test checks every part of your mouse in the browser and tells you which part is failing. Click a button and it lights up on the mouse picture; a button that stays grey is dead. The test also catches the faults simple click testers miss: a button that double-clicks when you click once, a button that gets stuck down, and a scroll wheel that jumps backwards. It measures your real polling rate and your double-click speed too. Nothing is installed and nothing leaves your computer.
At a Glance
Mouse Test checks every button, the scroll wheel, double-clicking and the polling rate of a mouse in the browser, and names the part that is failing.
| Feature | What you get | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Buttons | Left, right, wheel click and both side buttons light up on a mouse picture; 5-button, 3-button and trackpad modes. | Dead buttons, checking a new mouse |
| Double-click fault | Spots a button that clicks twice when pressed once and names it, without flagging fast clickers. | Mice that open files by accident |
| Stuck buttons | Finds a button the computer still thinks is held down after you let go. | Drags that drop in the wrong place |
| Scroll wheel | Counts steps read in the wrong direction while you scroll. | Pages that jump back while scrolling |
| Polling rate and double-click speed | Measures the real reports per second in Hz and your fastest double-click in milliseconds. | Gaming mice, double-click settings |
| Report | A health score with a plain list of faults and what to do about each. | Warranty claims and returns |
How to Test Your Mouse
- Pick your mouse: 5-Button, 3-Button or Trackpad. The score only counts the buttons your mouse has, so a laptop is never marked down for side buttons it does not own.
- Move onto the test area: the status turns green and the test starts. Move out and your mouse works normally again; the results so far are kept.
- Click every button: click each one several times. A worn switch often fails only now and then, so twenty clicks find more than one.
- Roll the wheel: a long, steady roll up, then down. The wheel on the picture turns with you and backwards steps are counted.
- Double-click a few times: your fastest double-click is timed.
- Move in fast circles: two or three seconds of steady movement measure the polling rate.
- Read the report: press See My Mouse Report for a health score and a plain list of what to fix.
The Four Faults This Test Finds
One press counts as two clicks. Files open when you meant to select them, and drags drop early. The most common mouse fault, and usually fixable.
The button does nothing at all and stays grey on the picture. Usually a broken switch or a damaged cable.
The computer thinks the button is still held down after you let go, so files are dragged when you only meant to click.
The page jumps up while you scroll down. The wheel is reading some steps in the wrong direction.
Why Mice Start Double-Clicking
Under each button is a tiny switch with two metal contacts. When you let go they spring apart and bounce for a moment, and the mouse is built to ignore that bounce. As the switch wears, gathers dust or corrodes, the bounce lasts longer, until the mouse counts it as a second click. Your hand clicked once; the switch clicked twice.
The test tells the two apart by speed. Even the fastest person needs about 60 to 80 milliseconds between two deliberate clicks, while a bouncing switch fires its extra click in under 30, with a press far too short for a finger. The test only flags a button when it sees both signs, so fast clickers are not told that a healthy mouse is broken.
Polling Rate
The polling rate is how many times per second the mouse reports its position, measured in Hz. Higher means smoother and quicker response in games; it is a setting, not a sign of a fault.
| Polling rate | Reports every | Typical mouse |
|---|---|---|
| 125 Hz | 8 ms | Office and budget mice |
| 250 Hz | 4 ms | Mid-range and battery-saving wireless mice |
| 500 Hz | 2 ms | Many gaming mice out of the box |
| 1000 Hz | 1 ms | Gaming mice at their highest setting |
Many online tests show 60 Hz for every mouse, because they really measure the screen. This test reads the mouse's own reports, so a 1000 Hz mouse shows close to 1000 Hz in Chrome and Edge. Some browsers only pass on one report per screen refresh; if your number looks too low, try Chrome or check the setting in your mouse software.
Double-Click Speed
Windows and macOS count two clicks as a double-click only if they arrive within about 500 milliseconds. If folders often fail to open and your fastest double-click here is slower than that, the setting is the problem, not the mouse. On Windows, change it in Mouse settings under Buttons; on a Mac, in Accessibility under Pointer Control.
How to Fix a Double-Clicking Mouse
- Check the warranty first. Double-clicking is so common that most makers replace the mouse without argument.
- Unplug the mouse or take out its battery.
- Open it. The screws are usually under the glide pads on the bottom; peel them off carefully so they can go back on.
- Clean the switch. Spray a little electrical contact cleaner into the small switch under the failing button, click it 30 to 40 times and let it dry completely.
- Test again here before you close the mouse, so you know whether it worked.
- Replace the switch if cleaning did not last. The part is cheap; fitting it needs a soldering iron unless your mouse has swappable switches.
Testing a Mouse Before You Buy or Return It
Run the test on a second-hand or new mouse while you can still return it. Get every button to 100%, then click each one twenty or thirty times, because a failing switch often shows itself only now and then. Roll the wheel a long way in both directions, and check that the polling rate matches what the seller promised.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I test my mouse online?
Move the pointer into the test area on this page, click every button a few times, roll the wheel up and down, double-click and move the mouse in circles. Each part lights up as it works, and the report names any button that is double-clicking, stuck or dead.
Why does my mouse double-click when I click once?
The switch under the button is worn or dirty. Its metal contacts bounce as they open, and once a switch ages that bounce is long enough to count as a second click. The test catches it because the second click comes faster than any finger can click, and the report names the button.
How do I know if a mouse button is dead?
Click it firmly while the test is running. A working button lights up on the mouse picture straight away. If it stays grey, the computer received nothing from that button, so the fault is in the mouse, not in a game or program.
How do I check my mouse polling rate?
Move the mouse in fast, continuous circles inside the test area for two or three seconds. The page shows the polling rate in Hz: about 125 Hz for most office mice, 500 or 1000 Hz for gaming mice. If the number is much lower than your mouse's setting, check the setting in your mouse software.
Why does my page jump backwards when I scroll?
The part inside the scroll wheel that senses which way it turns is worn or dirty, so some notches are read in the wrong direction. Roll the wheel steadily in one direction over the test area; the test counts those backwards steps.
What is a good double-click speed?
Under about 300 milliseconds between the two clicks is normal. Windows and macOS count two clicks as a double-click if they come within about 500 milliseconds. If your fastest is slower than that, the problem is the setting, not the mouse; you can change it in your mouse settings.
Can I fix a double-clicking mouse myself?
Often, yes. Most double-clicking comes from dirt on the switch contacts. Open the mouse, spray a little electrical contact cleaner into the small switch under the failing button and click it 30 to 40 times. If that does not hold, the switch can be replaced, or claim the warranty if the mouse is still covered.
Can I test a mouse on a phone or tablet?
No. A touchscreen has no buttons or wheel to test. Open this page on a computer with the mouse connected.
