About Image Translator

The Image Translator translates the text inside a picture and hands the picture back with the translation in place. Upload a photo of a sign, a product label, a poster, an app or website screenshot, an infographic or a document page, pick a language, and in about ten seconds you see the same picture in that language, with every line listed next to it so you can check and correct it.

What it does with your picture

  1. Reads every piece of text and where it sits, in any language and script.
  2. Translates it line by line into natural, idiomatic wording, keeping numbers, prices, units and brand names exactly.
  3. Re-sets the text in your browser: the original lettering is erased, the background filled in, and the translation set in the same place, size, color and alignment, at the picture's full resolution.

Tips for a good result

  • Photograph text straight on, in good light, and fill the frame with it.
  • A screenshot beats a photo of a screen.
  • If a translated line is too long, shorten it in the list or lower the text size.

Translating a whole restaurant menu? The Menu Translator also explains every dish. For manga and comics, the Manga Translator letters speech bubbles and handles a whole chapter at once. To translate plain text, use the AI Translator; to only copy the text out of a picture, the Image to Text Converter.

Standard result or AI redraw: what is the difference?

Every translation (1 credit) gives you the standard result: your browser erases the original text and sets the translation in its place. The AI redraw is an optional extra that rebuilds the whole picture with an image model. Below is the same example both ways, with the same translations: drag across it to compare.

Frequently asked questions

How do I translate an image?

Upload the picture, choose the language to translate into and press Translate image. In about 10 seconds you get the picture back with every piece of text replaced by its translation, in the same place, plus a list of all the lines you can edit, copy or download.

How do I translate an image to English?

Choose English under Translate into (it is the default on this page), then upload the photo or screenshot. The source language is detected automatically, so you don't need to know what language the picture is in.

Is it free?

Translating a picture costs 1 credit, and every visitor gets 3 free AI credits a day, so three pictures a day are free. Editing, re-setting the text, downloading and copying never cost anything extra. Only the optional AI redraw costs more (50 credits, paid credits only).

Can I translate a PDF?

Yes. Choose a PDF instead of a picture and its pages appear as thumbnails, all ticked (up to 30 at a time). Untick the pages you don't need and press Translate image: each page is translated as its own picture for 1 credit, and you can download them all as one translated PDF or as a ZIP of images. Pages are turned into pictures in your browser, so the PDF itself is never uploaded.

What is the difference between the translation and the AI redraw?

The translation erases the original text and sets your translation in its place with a clean font, right in your browser, at the picture's full resolution. It is ideal for screenshots, documents, menus, signs and anything with a plain background. The AI redraw rebuilds the whole picture with an image model so the new text matches the original lettering, curves and busy backgrounds, which is best for posters, packaging and marketing images.

Can I fix a translation?

Yes. Every line of text is listed next to the picture. Change any translation and the picture updates as you type; untick a line to leave the original text there. The AI redraw uses your edited lines exactly.

Which languages are supported?

It reads text in practically any language, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Thai and Hindi, and translates into English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Russian, Polish, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Turkish, Dutch, Ukrainian, Arabic and Hindi.

Is my picture kept?

No. The picture is sent once to be read and translated and is not stored. The translated image is made in your own browser.

How is this different from Google Translate's camera?

Google Lens lays a rough overlay on the photo. This tool gives you a clean, downloadable image in the original layout and resolution, a list of every line you can correct, and translations written the way a native speaker would put them rather than word for word.
