How to Make a Passport Photo

    1. Take the photo. Stand about 50 cm (1.5 ft) in front of a plain wall, facing a window or a lamp so your face is evenly lit. Have someone take the photo from about 1.2 m (4 ft) away at eye level, with your head and shoulders in the picture. Glasses off, hair away from your eyes, mouth closed.
    2. Choose the document. Pick your country and document. The size, the head height from chin to top of hair, and the background color are shown, with a link to the official page.
    3. Add the photo. Choose it, drop it onto the page, or use Take photo. Your face is found and the photo is cropped, straightened and given a new background.
    4. Check and adjust. Read the requirements check. If the head size or eye height is out of range, use Bigger, Smaller, Up or Down until it turns green.
    5. Download. Use the digital file for an online application, or download the print sheet (JPG or PDF) and print it at 100% scale.

    What the Check Looks At

📏 MeasurementsHead height from chin to the top of the hair, eye height in the frame, centering and a level head. These are the most common reasons a photo is rejected.
🙂 FaceEyes open, looking straight at the camera, and a neutral expression with the mouth closed.
💡 Photo qualityEven lighting with no strong shadow on one side, brightness, sharpness, and enough resolution for a clean print.
🖼️ FileExact pixel size, the background color, and the file size limit for online forms such as the DV Lottery (240 KB) or the China visa (40–120 KB).
What you still have to check yourself: glasses off, no hat or head covering except for religious or medical reasons, a photo taken in the last 6 months, and no filters, beauty mode or AI editing. Edited and AI-generated photos are rejected.

    Quick Answer

To make a passport photo online, have someone take a photo of you against a plain wall, choose your country and document here, and add the photo. It is cropped to the official size (2 × 2 in for a US passport, 35 × 45 mm for most other countries), the background is changed to white or the required color, and the photo is checked for head size, eyes, expression and lighting. Download the digital file or a 4 × 6 print sheet; the photo never leaves your device.

    Common Use Cases

    Renewing a passport online

The US online renewal, the UK and Canada ask for a digital photo with a minimum pixel size. Download the digital file and upload it to the application.

Printing photos for a paper application

Download the 4 × 6 print sheet and order a normal photo print at CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Boots or any photo kiosk, then cut along the lines.

    Visa and DV Lottery applications

Online visa forms reject photos that are the wrong pixel size or too large. The file is sized and compressed to the limit, such as 600 × 600 px and 240 KB for the DV Lottery.

ID cards, driver's licenses and resumes

Make 3 × 4 cm, 3.5 × 4.5 cm or 4 × 6 cm photos for national ID cards, student and work permits, Japanese resumes or Indonesian forms with a red or blue background.

    Baby and family passports

Lay a baby on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above. Babies under one year may have their eyes partly closed, but the other measurements still apply.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make a passport photo at home?

Stand in front of a plain wall in even light and have someone take a photo of you from about 1.2 m (4 ft) away. Choose your document on this page, add the photo, and the tool crops it to the official size, changes the background and checks the requirements. Download the digital file for an online application, or the 4×6 print sheet and print it at a pharmacy or photo kiosk.

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the hair, must be 1 to 1⅜ inches (25 to 35 mm), and the background must be white or off-white. For online renewal the digital photo must be at least 600 × 600 pixels.

Can I print a passport photo at CVS or Walgreens?

Yes. Download the 4×6 print sheet and order it as a normal 4×6 photo print, which usually costs well under $1. The sheet already holds two or more photos at the exact size, so you only need to cut them out along the thin lines.

Can I wear glasses in a passport photo?

Not for a US passport or visa, and not for the UK, Canada or many other countries. Take your glasses off for the photo unless you have a medical statement.

Can I smile in a passport photo?

The US accepts a natural smile with both eyes open. Most other countries, including the UK, Canada, the Schengen countries and India, ask for a neutral expression with the mouth closed. A neutral expression is accepted everywhere.

    Will my photo be accepted?

The tool measures what can be measured: head size, eye height, head tilt, eyes open, expression, lighting, sharpness, background and the digital file size. Things like glasses, hats and how recent the photo is are up to you, and the final decision is always made by the passport or visa office.

Can I use an AI-generated or edited photo?

No. Passport offices reject photos that are AI-generated, filtered or retouched, and an altered photo can delay your application. This tool only crops, resizes and replaces the background; it never changes your face.

    Is my photo uploaded?

No. Face detection, background replacement and the checks all run inside your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.

    Is it free?

Choosing a document, adding a photo, the requirements check and the preview are always free. You can download 3 photos a day for free; each photo includes both the digital file and the print sheet.

Requirements are summarized from the official pages linked in the tool; rules change, so check the official page before you apply.
