Pen

The fountain pen imitates pressure: move fast for a thin stroke, slow for a thick one.

Ink Colour

Black reads as formal; ink blue is the classic way to show a signature is original rather than photocopied.

Stroke Thickness

Thicker strokes survive being shrunk down inside a document; thin strokes look more like a real pen on paper.

Resolution

Use 2× or 4× for anything that will be printed, so the ink stays sharp at 300 DPI.

Padding Around the Ink

About Signature Generator

The Signature Generator turns a signature you draw — or a name you type — into a clean PNG image with a transparent background, ready to drop onto a contract, a PDF, an email footer or a slide. Because the background is genuinely transparent rather than white, the signature sits on the paper instead of covering it with a rectangle.

Everything happens inside your browser. The signature is drawn on an HTML canvas and exported by your own device, so no stroke data, image or name is ever uploaded.

At a Glance

Signature Generator lets you draw your signature or type it in a handwriting style, then save it as a transparent PNG for documents, or as a vector SVG.

How to Use the Signature Generator

  1. Pick how you want to sign. Stay on the Draw Signature tab to sign by hand, or switch to Type Signature to turn your typed name into handwriting.
  2. Sign or type your name. Draw across the pad above the dashed guide line, or enter your name and choose one of the five signature styles.
  3. Tune the ink. Choose a pen, an ink colour and a stroke thickness. Use Undo, Redo, Clear or Replay until the signature looks the way you want.
  4. Check the transparency. Flip the pad background between Checker, White and Dark. The signature should look clean on all three — that is proof the exported background is empty.
  5. Export it. Pick 1×, 2× or 4×, set the padding, then click Download PNG. The image is cropped to the ink and saved with a transparent background, or grab the vector SVG instead.

Why a transparent PNG matters

A screenshot or a photo of a signature almost always carries a background with it — a grey page, a slightly off-white sheet of paper, a JPG's compression fringe. Pasted onto a document, that background shows as a visible box that hides the signature line underneath and looks obviously pasted.

PNG keeps an alpha channel; JPG does not. Every pixel in a PNG carries a transparency value alongside its colour, so "no ink here" can be stored as truly nothing. JPG has no way to record that, which is why a JPG signature always arrives with a background attached.

How the drawing pen works

A signature drawn with a mouse normally looks wrong because a mouse produces a line of perfectly even thickness, while a real pen varies with speed and pressure. This tool measures how far the pointer travels between samples and uses that as a stand-in for pressure:

  • Fast strokes render thinner — the tail of a flourish tapers, exactly as a nib does when it is whipped across paper.
  • Slow strokes render thicker — the deliberate downstrokes of capital letters carry more ink.
  • The end of every stroke tapers off, imitating the pen lifting away from the page.

If you would rather have an even line, switch the pen to Ballpoint. Marker lays down a heavy constant stroke that stays legible when the image is shrunk, and Pencil draws a lighter, softer mark.

Pen styles compared

PenStroke behaviourBest for
🖋️ FountainStrongly variable width, tapered endsThe most realistic hand-signed look on contracts and letters
🖊️ BallpointNearly even widthForms and everyday paperwork, and mouse users who prefer control
🖍️ MarkerThick and constantSignatures that will be displayed small, or over a photo
✏️ PencilThin and semi-transparentInitials, monograms and light annotation marks

Typed signatures

Switch to the Type tab if you cannot draw comfortably with a trackpad. Enter your name, pick one of the five styles, then adjust the slant. Two extras stop a typed signature looking mechanically perfect:

  • Natural variation nudges each letter a fraction off the baseline and rotates it very slightly. The variation is derived from your name itself, so the same name always produces the same handwriting rather than reshuffling on every keystroke.
  • Underline flourish adds a hand-drawn swash beneath the name, the sort of stroke people add without thinking when signing.

The styles use handwriting fonts already installed on your device, which is why a signature can look slightly different on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. That is also why SVG export is offered for drawn signatures only — a vector file that references a font would break on a machine that lacks it, whereas drawn strokes are real geometry that travels intact.

Choosing an export size

ExportRoughlyUse it for
1× WebUp to about 1000 px wideEmail footers, web pages, on-screen forms, chat
2× DocumentUp to about 2000 px wideWord documents and PDFs that may be printed
4× PrintUp to about 4000 px wideCertificates, posters, anything printed large at 300 DPI

As a rule of thumb, a signature about 1000 pixels wide prints crisply at roughly 8 cm (3 inches). Exporting larger than you need adds file size, not detail.

PNG or SVG? The PNG is a pixel image at the size you picked and works everywhere. The SVG is a vector file built from the actual stroke paths you drew, so it stays perfectly sharp at any size and can be recoloured or edited in Illustrator, Inkscape or Figma — useful if the signature will be engraved, embroidered or printed very large.

How to add the signature to a document

Microsoft Word

Insert → Pictures → This Device, choose the PNG, then set Wrap Text to In Front of Text. You can now drag the signature onto the signature line and resize it from a corner handle. Because the background is transparent, the printed line stays visible under the ink.

PDF

Most PDF editors offer an image stamp or "Add image" annotation. Place the PNG over the signature field and scale it down until the ink height matches the surrounding text.

Google Docs

Insert → Image → Upload from computer, then choose the Wrap text or Behind text option so the signature can be positioned freely.

Email signature

Use the 1× export and keep the image under roughly 300 pixels wide. Remember that some email clients block images by default, so never rely on the signature image alone to carry your contact details.

Tips for a signature that looks real

  • Sign large, export trimmed. Use the full width of the pad — big movements are smoother than cramped ones, and the export is cropped to the ink anyway.
  • Move quickly. Drawing slowly produces a wobbly line. One confident sweep beats a careful trace every time.
  • Do not aim for perfection. Real signatures are inconsistent. If it takes ten tries to get a "perfect" one, it no longer looks like a signature.
  • Use a stylus or your finger on a phone or tablet if you have one — touch input records far more detail than a mouse.
  • Check it on dark. Flip the pad background to Dark before exporting. If a pale halo appears around the ink, thicken the stroke slightly and export at 2×.
  • Keep it modest in size inside documents. A signature much taller than the surrounding text reads as pasted-in.

Are electronic signatures legally valid?

In most places an electronic signature carries legal weight. The ESIGN Act and UETA in the United States, eIDAS in the European Union, and comparable statutes in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and India generally recognise a signature applied with the intent to sign. What the law cares about is intent, consent, and being able to show who signed and what they agreed to — not the file format.

Some documents are still excluded almost everywhere: wills and testamentary trusts, many property deeds, adoption and divorce paperwork, court filings, and notices such as utility shut-offs or foreclosure. High-value or regulated agreements may also require a qualified electronic signature backed by an identity certificate, which an image cannot provide. When in doubt, check your local rules or ask a lawyer.

Protect your signature image. Anyone holding the file can paste it onto any document. Store it somewhere private rather than on a shared drive, avoid publishing it on a public web page, and prefer a dedicated e-signature service with an audit trail for anything high-stakes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a signature with a transparent background?

Draw your signature in the pad or type your name, then click Download PNG. The exported file is a PNG whose background pixels have an alpha value of zero, so only the ink is visible. Placed on a contract, a letterhead or a dark slide, the signature shows no white box around it. A JPG cannot do this because the JPG format has no alpha channel.

Is the signature generator free?

Yes. Drawing or typing your signature, downloading it as a transparent PNG and copying it are free. The SVG vector export, which stays sharp at any size for print and design work, is part of a membership.

Is my signature uploaded to a server?

No. The signature is drawn on an HTML canvas element and exported by your own browser using the canvas toDataURL and toBlob methods. No stroke data, image or name is ever sent to miniwebtool or anywhere else, and nothing is stored after you close the page.

What size should I export my signature at?

For email footers, web pages and on-screen documents, 1× is enough. For a PDF or a Word document that will be printed, choose 2× or 4× so the signature stays crisp at 300 DPI. A signature roughly 1000 pixels wide prints cleanly at about 8 centimetres. Exporting larger than you need only makes the file bigger, it does not add detail.

Why does my drawn signature look thick and thin in places?

That is deliberate. The pen measures how fast you move and makes fast strokes thinner and slow strokes thicker, imitating the pressure a real pen puts on paper. It is what stops a mouse-drawn signature from looking like a flat, uniform line. Choose the Ballpoint pen if you prefer an even stroke width, or the Marker pen for a constant thick line.

Is an electronic signature made with this tool legally valid?

In many jurisdictions an electronic signature is legally recognised. The United States ESIGN Act and UETA, the EU eIDAS regulation and similar laws elsewhere generally accept a signature applied with the intent to sign. What matters legally is intent, consent and a record of who signed, not the file format. Some documents, such as wills, deeds and certain court filings, still require a handwritten or notarised signature. Check your local rules for high-value or regulated documents.

Can I use a typed signature instead of drawing one?

Yes. Switch to the Type tab, enter your name and pick one of the five handwriting styles. The typed signature is rendered with a small amount of natural variation in the position and angle of each letter so it does not look mechanically perfect. The styles use the handwriting fonts already installed on your device, so the exact look varies a little between Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.
