About Vocal Range Test
This vocal range test listens while you sing your lowest and highest note and tells you your vocal range in note names, your voice type (bass, baritone, tenor, alto, mezzo-soprano or soprano) and how your voice compares with each one. Then check any song: enter its lowest and highest note and see whether it fits, or which karaoke key to pick. It runs in your browser and nothing you sing is recorded or uploaded. No microphone? Pick your notes on the piano instead.

How to Test Your Vocal Range
- Warm up first. Hum, do a few lip trills or gentle sirens for a minute or two. A cold voice can lose several notes at both ends.
- Find a quiet spot. Hold the phone or sit near the computer, and turn off music and the TV.
- Sing your lowest note. Press Start the test, sing “ah” and slide down slowly. Hold the lowest note you can sing clearly for about a second, then press Next.
- Sing your highest note. Slide up and hold the highest clear note. Falsetto counts if it is a real tone, not a squeak.
- Read your result. Press Show my range to see your range, your closest voice type and the chart. Copy the link to share it.
Voice Types and Their Vocal Ranges
| Voice type | Typical range | Sound |
|---|---|---|
| Soprano | C4 – C6 | The highest female voice, bright and soaring |
| Mezzo-soprano | A3 – A5 | The most common female voice, warm in the middle |
| Contralto (alto) | F3 – F5 | The lowest female voice, dark and rich |
| Countertenor | G3 – E5 | A male voice singing mainly in trained falsetto |
| Tenor | C3 – C5 | The high male voice, ringing on top |
| Baritone | A2 – A4 | The most common male voice, full and warm |
| Bass | E2 – E4 | The lowest male voice, deep and heavy |
These are the ranges most often quoted for classical singing. Real voices overlap, and pop singers are usually grouped by where they sing most comfortably rather than by their extreme notes. That is why the test scores every voice type and shows the closest two, instead of a single label.
Reading Note Names
Notes are written as a letter and an octave number. C4 is middle C, the C in the middle of a piano. C5 is one octave above it, C3 one octave below. A4 is the 440 Hz tuning note. So a range of E2 – C5 means from the E almost two octaves below middle C to the C one octave above it: two octaves and eight semitones.
Choosing the Right Key for a Song
- Find the song’s range. Sheet music, karaoke song pages and many fan sites list the lowest and highest note of the melody.
- Each key step is one semitone. Key −2 on a karaoke machine moves every note two semitones lower, +2 two higher.
- Leave a little room. A song that touches your very highest note will tire your voice. If the check says it just fits, try one key lower for a long song.
- Male and female songs. A man singing a song written for a woman usually sings it an octave lower, and the other way round. The checker suggests this when a song sits far from your voice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find my vocal range?
Press Start the test and allow the microphone. Sing a steady “ah” and slide down to the lowest note you can hold clearly, then press Next and slide up to the highest. Hold each note for about a second. The test shows the range between those two notes and the voice type it fits best.
What is a good vocal range?
Most adults who have never trained can sing about one and a half octaves. Two octaves is plenty for almost any pop song in the right key, and trained singers often reach two and a half to three. Range matters less than how well and how comfortably you sing the notes in it.
What is the average vocal range for men and women?
A typical untrained male voice sits roughly between E2 or A2 and A4, and a typical untrained female voice between F3 or A3 and E5 or A5. Each person differs, and most voices gain a few notes at the top with regular practice.
Is the microphone test accurate?
It is accurate on a clear, steady note in a quiet room. Breathy notes, very low notes with little volume and background noise can be read an octave off, which is why a note only counts after you hold it steadily. Check a result by tapping the same key on the piano and singing along.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. The pitch is worked out inside your browser while you sing. Nothing is recorded, saved or sent anywhere, and the microphone turns off when the test ends.
Should I count falsetto and vocal fry?
Count falsetto or head voice if it is a clear, usable tone, and leave out croaks, vocal fry and squeaks. For choosing songs and a voice type, the notes you can sing comfortably matter more than the extremes.
How do I know which key to sing a song in?
Enter the song’s lowest and highest notes in Can I sing this song. The tool compares them with your range and gives the karaoke key change, for example −3 to sing three semitones lower, or an octave down when a man sings a song written for a female voice.
Can my vocal range get bigger?
Yes. Daily warm-ups such as lip trills and sirens, good breath support and lessons usually add a few notes, mostly at the top. Never push into pain or hoarseness. Your earlier results stay in this browser, so you can test again every few weeks and compare.
Is the vocal range test free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and works on phones, tablets and computers with a microphone. Without a microphone you can pick your notes on the piano.
