Brightness, focus, FPS and colour scored A–D with advice.
🩺 Camera Health Check
Samples real pixels from your feed for about 4 seconds and grades five things that decide how you look on a call — brightness, contrast, focus, frame-rate stability and white balance. Sit still and look at the camera while it runs.
🔍 Resolution Scan
Asks your camera for each standard mode and verifies what it actually returns — so you learn your real maximum resolution, not the number on the box. Your preview will flicker while it runs, then return to normal.
| Mode | Resolution | Aspect | Support |
|---|
A mode counts as supported only if the camera returns exactly the size that was requested. Some cameras accept a large size but produce it by upscaling a smaller sensor mode — those are flagged as Upscaled.
📊 Live Lighting Analysis
Your exposure right now. Aim for a histogram with a broad hump in the middle — a wall of pixels against the left edge means you are too dark, and a spike on the right edge means highlights are blown out and lost for good.
About Webcam Test

What Is a Webcam Test?
A webcam test confirms that your camera is detected, has permission to run, and produces a usable picture. Most online testers stop there — they show you a mirror and the resolution the browser asked for. That answers "is my camera on?" but not the question people actually have before a job interview or a client call: "do I look good, and if not, why not?"
This tool answers the second question. It measures the frames your camera really delivers, probes which resolutions it truly supports, and analyses your actual pixels to grade brightness, contrast, focus, frame-rate stability and white balance — each with a specific fix.
How This Webcam Test Works
The test uses the browser's standard getUserMedia API to open your camera, draws the feed into a hidden canvas, and reads the pixels back for analysis. Because all of this happens inside the page, your video never travels over the network. When you click Stop Camera or close the tab, the stream ends and your camera's indicator light goes out.
🔒 Privacy: no video is uploaded, recorded, or stored. There is no server-side processing of your camera at all — the analysis code runs in your own browser, on your own hardware.
Understanding Your Results
Resolution
The number of pixels in each frame, read straight from the live video track — so it is the size your camera is genuinely producing right now, not a requested value. Higher is not automatically better: a 1080p feed at an unstable 15 fps usually looks worse on a call than a rock-steady 720p feed.
Measured FPS vs Declared FPS
Declared FPS is what your camera claims it can do. Measured FPS is what it is actually handing to the browser, counted frame by frame. The gap between the two is the single most useful number on this page. Webcams quietly halve or quarter their frame rate in dim light, because each frame needs a longer exposure to collect enough light. That is why your video looks smooth by a window at noon and choppy in the same room at night.
Aspect Ratio
The shape of your frame. 16:9 is the standard for video calls and streaming; 4:3 is common on older and budget webcams and appears with black bars on either side in most calling apps.
Common Webcam Resolutions
| Mode | Resolution | Aspect | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| QVGA | 320 × 240 | 4:3 | Very old cameras, low-bandwidth fallback |
| VGA | 640 × 480 | 4:3 | Budget and older built-in webcams |
| HD 720p | 1280 × 720 | 16:9 | The sweet spot for most video calls |
| Full HD 1080p | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | Streaming, recording, large screens |
| QHD 1440p | 2560 × 1440 | 16:9 | High-end webcams and capture cards |
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | Premium webcams, DSLRs and phones |
Note that most calling apps downscale your video anyway — Zoom and Google Meet typically send 720p or less to save bandwidth. Testing at 1080p is still worth doing, because a camera with a larger sensor mode usually produces a cleaner 720p image after downscaling.
What the Camera Health Check Measures
| Check | What it measures | Grade A means |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | Average luminance of your frame | Your face sits in the midtone range — not a silhouette, not blown out |
| Contrast | How widely pixel values are spread | You stand out clearly from your background |
| Sharpness / focus | A Laplacian focus score that detects blur | Fine detail is resolved: clean lens, correct focus |
| Frame rate stability | Delivered frames vs the declared rate | You are getting at least 90% of the promised frames |
| White balance | Imbalance between red, green and blue | Neutral colour with no visible cast |
Each check is graded from A to D, and the overall grade is the average of all five — so a single failing area cannot hide behind four good ones.
Common Webcam Problems and How to Fix Them
A window or lamp behind you forces the camera to expose for the background. Turn around so the light faces you, or close the blind.
Almost always dim light halving your frame rate. Add a light in front of you and watch the Measured FPS climb in real time.
Fingerprints and dust on the lens, or a half-open privacy shutter. Wipe the lens with a dry cloth — it fixes more cameras than any setting.
Mixed lighting confuses auto white balance. Use one type of light source, or set white balance manually in your camera software.
Another app is holding the camera. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, Discord and OBS, plus any other browser tab using it, then retry.
The sensor is amplifying a weak signal in low light. More light in front of you removes the noise at its source — no filter can.
Webcam Not Working? Troubleshooting by Browser

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this webcam test safe and private?
Yes. The test runs entirely inside your browser using the standard getUserMedia API. Your video is displayed and analysed on your own device and is never uploaded, recorded on a server, or shared with anyone. Nothing is stored: when you click Stop Camera or close the tab, the stream ends and the camera light goes out.
Why is my measured FPS lower than my camera's rated frame rate?
Most webcams lower their frame rate automatically in dim light, because each frame needs a longer exposure to collect enough light. A 30 fps camera commonly drops to 15 or even 7.5 fps in a poorly lit room, which is why your video looks choppy on calls. Adding light in front of you is usually the fastest fix. A busy CPU, a slow USB hub, or another app sharing the camera can also reduce delivered frames.
Why does my webcam not show 1080p or 4K?
The resolution you get is the resolution the browser negotiated with the camera, not necessarily the maximum the hardware supports. Run the Resolution Scan to see which modes your camera really accepts. If a mode fails, the camera does not support it at all. Some cameras also advertise a high resolution but produce it by upscaling a smaller sensor mode, so the scan verifies that the video track truly reports the size that was requested.
Why is my webcam black or not working?
The most common causes are: another application such as Zoom, Teams or Skype is already holding the camera, so close it and try again; a privacy shutter or sliding cover is closed; camera permission is blocked for this site in your browser settings; or your operating system privacy settings deny camera access to browsers. On Windows check Settings, Privacy and security, Camera. On macOS check System Settings, Privacy and Security, Camera.
What is a good webcam resolution and frame rate for video calls?
For most video calls 1280 × 720 at a steady 30 fps looks better than 1920 × 1080 at an unstable 15 fps, because motion smoothness matters more than pixel count on a small call window. Choose 1080p when you record, stream, or appear on a large screen and you have good lighting. A stable frame rate and even lighting improve perceived quality far more than resolution alone.
What does the Camera Health Check actually measure?
It samples real pixels from your video feed for a few seconds and computes five things: average brightness, contrast measured as the spread of pixel values, sharpness measured with a Laplacian focus score that detects blur, frame-rate stability comparing delivered frames against the rate your camera advertises, and white balance measured as the imbalance between the red, green and blue channels. Each one is graded A to D with a plain-language fix.
Does this webcam test work on a phone?
Yes. On a phone or tablet the tool works the same way and you can switch between the front and rear cameras using the camera selector. The rear camera usually supports much higher resolutions than the front one, which the Resolution Scan will show. The page requires a secure HTTPS connection, which this site always uses.
