How to Use the Meditation Timer
- Choose a length. Tap 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes, or type your own. A quick start such as Quick calm or Silent sit sets everything in one tap.
- Set your bells. Pick a singing bowl, chime, gong or soft tone. Add an interval bell every few minutes if you like, and choose three bells, one bell or a quiet fade-out at the end.
- Add sound or breathing. Choose a background sound and its volume, and a breathing guide if you want a rhythm to follow.
- Press Start and sit. A short settle-in countdown gives you time to get comfortable before the first bell. Full screen turns the whole screen into a calm clock.
- See your progress. Each finished session goes into your private log: sessions, total minutes and the days in a row you have sat.
Breathing Patterns
| Pattern | In · hold · out · hold | One breath | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box breathing | 4 · 4 · 4 · 4 seconds | 16 s | Calming down fast before a meeting, exam or hard conversation |
| 4-7-8 breath | 4 · 7 · 8 seconds | 19 s | Winding down and falling asleep |
| Calm 4-6 | 4 · 6 seconds | 10 s | Easing stress with a longer out-breath; easy for beginners |
| Even 5-5 | 5 · 5 seconds | 10 s | Steady breathing at about six breaths a minute |
| My own counts | Any 1–20 seconds each | — | Following a teacher's or therapist's pattern |
Breathe through your nose if you can, and stop holding your breath if you feel dizzy. Shorter counts work just as well.

Tips for a Better Session
- Same time, same place. Sitting at the same time each day, such as after brushing your teeth, makes the habit easier to keep than finding the time later.
- Short and daily beats long and rare. Five minutes every day does more than an hour once a week. Let the streak remind you.
- Use the interval bell as a reset. Your mind will wander. When the bell rings, notice where it went and gently come back to the breath.
- Get the volume right first. Press Test bell before you start so the first bell does not startle you.
- Put the phone face down. Leave the page open with the screen on; turn on Do Not Disturb so messages do not interrupt you.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I use this meditation timer?
Tap a length such as 10 minutes, or a quick start such as Quick calm, and press Start. A short settle-in countdown runs, a bell marks the start, and the ending bells tell you when the time is up. You can add interval bells, background sounds or a breathing guide in Settings.
What are interval bells for?
An interval bell rings every few minutes during the session. Many people use it to bring their attention back after it has wandered, to change posture in a long sit, or to switch between parts of a practice, such as breathing, body scan and open awareness.
How do I do box breathing?
Choose Box breathing 4-4-4-4. Breathe in through your nose while the circle grows for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out while it shrinks for 4, and hold for 4. Repeat for a few minutes. The word in the circle and the count tell you what to do next.
What is 4-7-8 breathing?
4-7-8 breathing means breathing in for 4 seconds, holding for 7 and breathing out slowly for 8. The long out-breath helps many people relax and fall asleep. If holding for 7 feels hard, choose My own counts and use shorter numbers.
Can I use it to fall asleep?
Yes. The Sleep quick start plays brown noise with a 4-7-8 breathing guide and ends with no bell: the sound fades out slowly over the last minute, so nothing wakes you up.
Will the bells ring if I switch tabs or lock my phone?
The bells are set to the real time when you press Start, so they still ring on time in a background tab. Some phones stop sound from web pages when the screen locks, so leave this page open with the screen on. The timer keeps the screen awake while it runs, and full-screen mode dims everything else.
How long should I meditate?
Five to ten minutes a day is a good start. Sitting every day matters more than sitting long. Add a few minutes each week; many regular meditators sit for 20 to 45 minutes.
Is my meditation log private?
Yes. Your sessions, total minutes and streak are saved only in this browser on this device. Nothing is sent to a server, and Clear log deletes them.
Is it free?
Yes. The meditation timer is free, with no sign-up and no app to install, on phones, tablets and computers. You can add it to your home screen from your browser's menu.
