Bike Size Calculator

Find your correct bike frame size from your height and inseam for road, mountain, and hybrid bikes. This calculator combines the accurate inseam formula with a height-based size chart, cross-checks the two for confidence, and also recommends your ideal saddle height and standover clearance. See your fit on an animated bicycle diagram and a size gauge, with a full step-by-step breakdown in metric or imperial units.

About Bike Size Calculator

The Bike Size Calculator finds the right frame size for your body, whether you ride a road bike, a mountain bike, or a hybrid / city bike. It uses the accurate inseam formula that professional bike fitters rely on, cross-checks it against a height-based size chart, and returns both a frame measurement and a simple S / M / L size. As a bonus it also recommends your ideal saddle height and standover clearance, so you can set the bike up correctly the day it arrives.

What Size Bike Do I Need?

The size of a bike is described by its frame size — traditionally the length of the seat tube. Road and hybrid frames are usually measured in centimetres, while mountain-bike frames are measured in inches or given as S / M / L. The correct frame size depends mostly on your leg length (inseam), because your legs set both how much clearance you have over the top tube and how high your saddle needs to be. Height is a useful shortcut, but two riders of the same height can need different frames if their leg-to-torso proportions differ.

How Bike Frame Sizing Works

This calculator uses two independent methods and compares them:

Method 1 — Road Bike (cm)
$$\text{Frame Size (cm)} = \text{Inseam (cm)} \times 0.665$$
Method 1 — Mountain Bike (in)
$$\text{Frame Size (in)} = \text{Inseam (cm)} \times 0.226$$
Method 1 — Hybrid / City Bike (cm)
$$\text{Frame Size (cm)} = \text{Inseam (cm)} \times 0.685$$

Method 2 maps your height to a frame range using the standard sizing charts below. When both methods point to the same size, you have a high-confidence fit. When they disagree, you are between sizes — the calculator tells you which is which and how to decide.

Inseam vs Height: Which Should I Use?

Use your inseam whenever you can. Height charts are convenient, but they assume an average leg-to-torso ratio. Riders with long legs relative to their height often need a frame one size larger than a height chart predicts, and short-legged riders one size smaller. Because the inseam directly determines standover clearance and saddle height, it is the measurement that matters most for a safe, comfortable fit.

How to Measure Your Inseam

  1. Stand barefoot with your back against a wall, feet about 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart.
  2. Place a hardcover book between your legs, spine facing up, and pull it up firmly to mimic the pressure of a saddle.
  3. Keep the book level and measure from its top edge straight down to the floor.
  4. That distance — in centimetres or inches — is your cycling inseam. Measure twice for accuracy.

Saddle Height and Standover Clearance

Once you know your frame size, two more numbers finish the fit:

Saddle Height (LeMond method)
$$\text{Saddle Height} = \text{Inseam (cm)} \times 0.883$$

Measure the saddle height from the centre of the crank (pedal axle) to the top of the saddle, along the seat tube. Standover clearance is the gap between the top tube and your crotch when you straddle the bike flat-footed. Aim for roughly 1–3 cm on a road bike, 2.5–5 cm on a hybrid, and 5–10 cm on a mountain bike so you can dismount safely on rough ground.

What Affects Your Ideal Bike Size?

📏 Inseam / Leg Length

The single biggest factor — it sets standover clearance and saddle height directly.

🚲 Bike Type

Road, mountain, and hybrid frames use different geometry and are sized on different scales.

🧍 Torso & Arm Length

They affect your reach to the bars; the stem and handlebar setup fine-tune this after frame size.

🎯 Riding Style

A racier position favours a smaller frame; a relaxed, upright position favours a larger one.

🏭 Brand Geometry

Sizing varies between brands, so always check the manufacturer's own size chart before buying.

🔧 Adjustability

Seatpost, stem, and saddle position let a good bike shop dial in the final fit around the frame.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose your bike type: Road, mountain, or hybrid / city — each is sized differently.
  2. Pick your units: Imperial (ft/in) or Metric (cm).
  3. Enter your height: In feet and inches, or in centimetres.
  4. Add your inseam: Optional but strongly recommended for the most accurate result.
  5. Review your fit: See your recommended frame size and size label on the gauge, your saddle height, standover clearance, and a full step-by-step breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know what size bike I need?

The most accurate way is to measure your inseam and multiply it by a factor for your bike type: 0.665 for a road frame in centimetres, 0.226 for a mountain frame in inches, and 0.685 for a hybrid frame in centimetres. A height chart is a good cross-check. This calculator does both and tells you the resulting S, M, or L size.

Is inseam or height better for bike sizing?

Inseam is better. Two people of the same height can have very different leg lengths, and it is leg length that sets your standover clearance and saddle height. Height charts are convenient but only approximate, so if you can measure your inseam you should always use it.

How do I measure my inseam for a bike?

Stand barefoot with your back to a wall and your feet about 15 to 20 cm apart. Place a book between your legs and pull it up firmly to mimic a saddle. Measure from the top of the book to the floor in centimetres or inches. That distance is your cycling inseam.

What is standover height on a bike?

Standover height is the height of the top tube where you straddle the bike. You want clearance between the top tube and your crotch when standing flat-footed: about 1 to 3 cm for road bikes, 2.5 to 5 cm for hybrids, and 5 to 10 cm for mountain bikes so you can dismount safely on rough terrain.

What if I am between two bike sizes?

If your inseam and height point to different sizes, you are between sizes. Choose the smaller frame for a sportier, more agile and aggressive fit, or the larger frame for a more upright, comfortable reach. Test riding both is the best way to decide, and a bike shop can fine-tune the fit with stem and seatpost adjustments.

How do I set my saddle height?

A common starting point is the LeMond method: multiply your inseam in centimetres by 0.883. Measure this distance from the centre of the pedal axle (crank) to the top of the saddle along the seat tube. Fine-tune from there so your knee has a slight bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke.
