About Beep Test Calculator
The Beep Test Calculator turns your beep test result — the level and shuttle you reached on the 20 metre multi-stage fitness test (also called the bleep test, PACER, or Léger shuttle run) — into an estimated VO₂ max. It also rates your aerobic fitness against age- and gender-based norms, and shows the running speed you hit, the total number of shuttles you completed, the distance you covered, and how long you were on your feet.
What is the Beep Test?
The beep test is a progressive shuttle-run test used by coaches, the military, and PE teachers around the world to measure aerobic (cardiovascular) endurance. You run continuously back and forth over a 20 metre course, timing each length to an audio beep. The beeps start slow and get faster at the end of every one-minute level. You keep going until you can no longer reach the line before the beep — the level and shuttle you reach is your score.
Beep Test VO₂ Max Formula
This calculator uses the widely cited Léger equation, which predicts VO₂ max from the running speed at the final level reached and the athlete's age:
Léger (1988): A is the actual age below 18; from age 18 onward, A = 18. Actual age is retained for the reference age group. The adult validation sample was 18–50 years old; this is an estimate, not a measured VO₂max.

What Affects Your Beep Test Score?
The biggest driver — your heart and lungs' ability to deliver oxygen to working muscles. Endurance training raises it directly.
Every shuttle ends in a 180° turn. Decelerating, pivoting, and accelerating efficiently saves energy over dozens of turns.
Reaching the line just as the beep sounds — rather than sprinting early and waiting — conserves energy for the higher levels.
A grippy, non-slip surface and supportive shoes make turns faster and safer, improving your reachable level.
VO₂ max is relative to body weight, so carrying less non-functional mass improves your ml/kg/min score.
The test is maximal — it only works if you push to genuine exhaustion. A strong finish can add a full level.

It depends on age and sex, but as a rough guide for adults, reaching level 9 to 11 is a good recreational score, level 12 to 13 is very good, and level 13 and above is excellent and typical of competitive team-sport athletes. Elite endurance and team-sport athletes can reach level 14 or higher.
What level is average on the beep test?
For a moderately active adult, an average result is around level 7 to level 9, which corresponds to a VO₂ max in the fair to good range for most age groups. Trained athletes commonly reach level 11 and above.
Is the beep test accurate for VO₂ max?
The beep test gives a useful estimate rather than a lab-grade measurement. Actual VO₂ max is measured directly with gas analysis on a treadmill. Prediction equations like Léger's are accurate to within a few ml/kg/min for most people, but motivation, running technique, footwear, and surface can all affect the result.
How can I improve my beep test score?
Improve aerobic endurance with regular running, interval training, and tempo runs, and practise the shuttle test itself so your turns and pacing become efficient. Building your VO₂ max takes consistent cardiovascular training over several weeks, combined with good recovery and body-weight management.
