About Rowing Pace Calculator
The Rowing Pace Calculator converts between the three numbers every indoor rower cares about — your /500m split, your power in watts, and your speed and calories — using the same physics as a Concept2 Performance Monitor. Enter any one of them (or a distance and a time you have rowed) and instantly see all the others, an animated stroke at your stroke rate, projected finish times for standard erg pieces, and where your pace sits on a reference scale.
What is a Rowing Split?
On an erg, pace is quoted as a /500m split: the time it would take to row 500 meters at your current effort. A split of 1:52 means 1 minute 52 seconds per 500 meters. Because the split is a time, a lower split is faster — the opposite of watts, where higher is faster. This tool keeps both in view so you never have to convert in your head.

The cube in Step 2 is why rowing feels so punishing near your limit: halving your split (rowing twice as fast) takes eight times the power.

What is a Good Rowing Split?
There is no single answer — a split is only "good" relative to the distance, and to your sex and body weight. A pace you can hold for a 500m sprint is far faster than one you can hold for a 10k. As a rough, distance-agnostic reference for a 2k-style effort:
- Under 1:35 — Elite, national and international standard.
- 1:35 – 1:50 — Advanced, competitive club rower.
- 1:50 – 2:05 — Intermediate, regular fit rower.
- 2:05 – 2:25 — Recreational, steady aerobic pace.
- Over 2:25 — Beginner base pace, a great place to build from.
Does Stroke Rate Affect Your Split?
Not on its own. Your split is determined by how much work you put into each stroke, not by how many strokes you take. Rating higher (more strokes per minute) only lowers your split if it lets you apply more total power — many rowers actually go faster at a lower rate with a stronger drive. What stroke rate does change is your distance per stroke, which this calculator shows if you enter your rate.

What is a /500m split in rowing?
The /500m split is the time it would take to row 500 meters at your current pace, written as minutes and seconds such as 1:52. It is the standard way rowers describe pace on a Concept2 erg, and a lower split means you are rowing faster.
How do you convert a rowing split to watts?
Concept2 uses a cube law. First convert the split to seconds per meter by dividing the split in seconds by 500. Then watts equals 2.80 divided by the pace per meter cubed. For example a 2:00 split is 0.24 seconds per meter, giving about 202 watts.
How are calories per hour calculated on a rowing machine?
The Concept2 monitor uses Calories per hour = 4 × watts × 0.8604 + 300. This value depends only on power, not on body weight, which is why the same split shows the same calorie rate for everyone on the monitor.
What is a good rowing split?
It depends on distance, sex and body weight, but as a rough guide a /500m split under 1:35 is elite, 1:35 to 1:50 is advanced, 1:50 to 2:05 is intermediate, and above 2:05 is recreational. Splits are always faster over short pieces than over long ones.
Does stroke rate change my split?
Not directly. Your split is set by how much power you put into each stroke, not by how many strokes you take per minute. A higher stroke rate only lowers your split if it lets you apply more total power. Distance per stroke, however, does depend on stroke rate.
How do I project my 2k or 5k time from a split?
Multiply your pace per meter by the distance. Since a split is per 500 meters, a 2000 meter time is four times your split and a 5000 meter time is ten times your split, assuming you hold the same pace the whole way. This calculator projects those times for you automatically.
