About Cost Per Mile Calculator

The Cost Per Mile Calculator works out the true cost of driving your car per mile — not just fuel, but every dollar it takes to keep the car on the road: fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance and tires, registration and taxes, and finance charges. It then shows the one thing most calculators skip: how your cost per mile falls as you drive more, because fixed costs spread across more miles. You also get a comparison to the IRS standard mileage rate and a full category breakdown.

What is Cost Per Mile?

Cost per mile is the total amount it costs you to drive one mile in your own car, once every ownership cost is included. It is the single most useful number for deciding whether to drive or fly, whether a job with a long commute is worth it, how much to charge for deliveries or rideshare, and whether a mileage reimbursement actually covers your expenses. Fuel alone typically accounts for only a quarter to a third of the real figure.

Cost Per Mile Formula

The calculation has two halves — costs that grow with distance, and costs you pay every year no matter what — added together and divided by how far you drive.

Fuel Cost Per Mile
$$\text{Fuel per mile} = \frac{\text{Fuel price per gallon}}{\text{Miles per gallon (MPG)}}$$
True Cost Per Mile
$$\text{Cost per mile} = \frac{\text{Total annual cost}}{\text{Annual miles driven}}$$
Why It Falls With Mileage
$$\text{Cost per mile} = \text{Variable per mile} + \frac{\text{Fixed annual cost}}{\text{Annual miles}}$$

That last form is the key insight: the fixed part of your cost per mile is divided by your annual mileage, so the more miles you drive, the smaller each mile's share of insurance, depreciation and registration becomes.

Fixed vs Variable Driving Costs

Separating the two is what makes a cost-per-mile number trustworthy:

CostTypeBehavior
FuelVariableRises directly with miles driven and fuel price
Maintenance & TiresVariableOil, brakes, tires and repairs scale with mileage
InsuranceFixedPaid yearly regardless of distance
DepreciationFixedValue lost to age and mileage; usually the biggest cost
Registration & TaxesFixedAnnual fees that do not change with driving
Finance ChargesFixedLoan or lease interest paid each year

Typical Cost Per Mile by Vehicle Type

Real figures vary widely with mileage, but these ranges (all-in, USD) give a sense of scale for a car driven around 12,000–15,000 miles a year:

VehicleTypical Cost / MileMain Drivers
Small efficient car40 – 55¢Low fuel and depreciation
Midsize sedan55 – 70¢Balanced across all costs
SUV / crossover65 – 85¢Higher fuel and depreciation
Pickup truck75 – 100¢+Fuel, depreciation, insurance
Luxury vehicle90 – 130¢+Steep depreciation and insurance

What Affects Your Cost Per Mile?

📉 Depreciation

The loss in your car's value is usually the largest single cost — often more than fuel. New cars depreciate fastest.

🛣️ Annual Mileage

Driving more spreads fixed costs thinner, lowering cost per mile — but raises total spending on fuel and upkeep.

Fuel Economy

Higher MPG and lower fuel prices cut the variable cost of every mile you drive.

🛡️ Insurance & Finance

Premiums and loan interest are fixed annual costs that weigh heavily on low-mileage drivers.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your annual mileage and fuel details: How many miles you drive per year, your fuel price per gallon, and your car's MPG.
  2. Add your yearly costs: Insurance, depreciation, maintenance and tires, registration and taxes, and finance charges. Leave any you do not pay blank.
  3. Click Calculate: The tool computes your true cost per mile instantly.
  4. Review your results: See the fixed-versus-variable split, the mileage curve showing how driving more changes your cost, the IRS rate comparison, a full cost breakdown, and a step-by-step calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average cost per mile to drive a car?

For a typical new car driven about 15,000 miles a year, the all-in cost is roughly 60 to 80 cents per mile once you include fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance, registration and finance charges. Small efficient cars driven a lot can be under 40 cents per mile, while large trucks or low-mileage vehicles can exceed one dollar per mile.

How do you calculate cost per mile?

Add up all of your yearly driving costs (fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance and tires, registration and taxes, and finance charges) to get your total annual cost, then divide by the number of miles you drive in a year. Cost per mile = total annual cost ÷ annual miles driven.

Why does cost per mile go down the more I drive?

Fixed costs like insurance, depreciation and registration stay about the same whether you drive 5,000 or 25,000 miles a year. When you spread those fixed dollars over more miles, each mile carries a smaller share of them, so your cost per mile falls. Only variable costs such as fuel and maintenance rise with distance.

What is the difference between fixed and variable driving costs?

Variable costs change with how far you drive, mainly fuel and maintenance and tires. Fixed costs are paid every year no matter how much you drive, including insurance, depreciation, registration and taxes, and finance charges. Cost per mile is the sum of the variable cost per mile plus the fixed cost spread across your annual mileage.

Does the IRS mileage rate cover my real cost per mile?

The 2025 IRS standard mileage rate for business use is 70 cents per mile. If your true cost per mile is below that, mileage reimbursement more than covers your driving cost; if it is above, you are effectively paying out of pocket. High-mileage, efficient cars usually come out ahead, while expensive or low-mileage vehicles often cost more than the rate.

Should I include depreciation in cost per mile?

Yes. Depreciation, the loss in your car's value over time, is usually the single largest cost of ownership and often larger than fuel. Ignoring it makes driving look far cheaper than it really is. Estimate your annual depreciation as the drop in your car's market value over a year, or use a car depreciation calculator.
