How Motorcycle Gearing Works
Your final drive ratio is simply the rear sprocket tooth count divided by the front (countershaft) sprocket tooth count. It is the last gear reduction between the engine and the road, sitting after the primary reduction and the gearbox. Because it multiplies everything upstream of it, a small change at the sprockets changes acceleration and cruising revs across every gear at once, which is why it is the cheapest meaningful performance change on a chain-driven motorcycle.
A higher ratio (smaller front or larger rear sprocket) is called shorter or lower gearing. It multiplies torque at the rear wheel, so the bike accelerates harder, revs higher at any road speed, and reaches a lower gearing-limited top speed. A lower ratio (larger front or smaller rear) is taller gearing: calmer highway revs, slightly better economy, softer drive.
Why One Tooth at the Front Is Not One Tooth at the Rear
The front sprocket usually carries 14 to 17 teeth while the rear carries 38 to 52, so a single tooth is a far bigger percentage change at the front. On a 16/45 setup, going to a 15 tooth front raises the ratio by 6.7%, and matching that at the rear takes three extra teeth (45 to 48). Front sprockets are cheap and quick to change, but they are a coarse adjustment; rear sprockets let you fine tune in roughly 2% steps.

Chain Length After a Sprocket Change
Adding teeth wraps more chain around the sprockets, so a bigger rear eventually needs a longer chain. The required length in pitches (links) follows the standard roller chain formula, where C is the center distance between the countershaft and the rear axle and p is the chain pitch:
Chains must have an even number of links so the joining link mates an outer plate with an inner plate, so the result is always rounded up to an even count. Chain pitch comes from the size stamped on the side plates: 420 and 428 chains have a 12.70 mm pitch, while 520, 525, 530 and 630 chains all use 15.875 mm. Small swaps are often absorbed by the axle adjusters, but always check you still have adjuster travel left for correct chain slack.
Speedometer Error After a Sprocket Swap
Most chain-driven motorcycles read speed from the gearbox output shaft and convert those revolutions using the factory final drive ratio. Change the sprockets and that conversion is now wrong by exactly the ratio change: gear the bike 6.7% shorter and the speedometer reads about 6.7% high, so an indicated 70 mph is really about 65.6 mph. Odometer and trip distances drift by the same percentage. Bikes that take speed from a front wheel sensor or an ABS ring are unaffected, which is why this calculator asks which pickup your bike uses.

What does changing motorcycle sprockets actually do?
A sprocket change alters the final drive ratio, which is rear teeth divided by front teeth. A higher ratio (smaller front or bigger rear) is called shorter or lower gearing: the rear wheel turns fewer times per engine revolution, so torque at the wheel and acceleration go up while gearing-limited top speed goes down and revs at any given speed rise. Is one tooth down at the front the same as three teeth up at the rear?
