Small Pet Age Calculator
Convert your rabbit, guinea pig, or hamster's age into human-equivalent years. Small pets each age on their own curve — a hamster races through life far faster than a rabbit — so this calculator uses a separate non-linear age chart for every species instead of one multiplier. See your pet's life stage, an animated life-journey timeline, how many human years it ages each year, the percentage of its life lived, an estimate of years remaining, and a side-by-side comparison showing how differently rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters age at the very same calendar age.

Small Pet Age Calculator
The Small Pet Age Calculator converts the age of your rabbit, guinea pig, or hamster into human-equivalent years, so you can picture what stage of life your pocket pet is really in. Because these three species live for very different lengths of time — a hamster races through life in two to three years while a rabbit can reach twelve — this tool uses a separate non-linear age chart for each species instead of one shared multiplier. It also shows your pet's life stage, an animated life-journey timeline, how many human years it ages each year, the percentage of its life lived, an estimate of the years it may have left, and a unique side-by-side comparison of how differently the three species age at the very same age.
How Small Pet Years Convert to Human Years
Rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters all mature very quickly in their first year — reaching the human equivalent of a young adult in months — and then age progressively more slowly. But the pace is not shared: one hamster year can be worth several times as many human years as one rabbit year. That is why a single "times seven" (or any one multiplier) is misleading. This calculator reads your pet's age off its own species chart and interpolates between the nearest points.
Here \(A\) is your pet's age, \(A_{lo}\) and \(A_{hi}\) are the nearest lower and upper pet ages on that species' chart, and \(H_{lo}\) and \(H_{hi}\) are their matching human ages.
The Big Idea: Same Age, Very Different Human Years
The most surprising thing about small pets is how differently they age. At exactly two years old:
- a rabbit is a young adult of about 27 human years,
- a guinea pig is roughly 30 human years,
- but a hamster is already elderly at about 70 human years.
The comparison panel in the results makes this vivid, which is exactly why you should never reuse the "dog years" or "cat years" rules — or a single small-pet multiplier — across these species.
Small Pet Age to Human Age Chart
| Pet Age | 🐰 Rabbit | 🐹 Guinea Pig | 🐭 Hamster |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 months | 10 | 13 | 28 |
| 1 year | 21 | 20 | 42 |
| 2 years | 27 | 30 | 70 |
| 3 years | 33 | 40 | 88 |
| 4 years | 39 | 50 | — |
| 5 years | 45 | 60 | — |
| 6 years | 51 | 70 | — |
| 8 years | 63 | 90 | — |
| 10 years | 75 | — | — |
| 12 years | 87 | — | — |
All values are in human years. A dash means the age is beyond that species' natural lifespan. Values between the rows are interpolated by the calculator, so any age — including part-years such as "1 year and 6 months" — gets a precise human-equivalent number.
The Life Stages of a Small Pet
🐰 Rabbit (typical lifespan 8 – 12 years)
- Baby / Kit (0 – 6 months): A nursing then weaned baby, growing extremely fast.
- Adolescent (6 – 12 months): A hormonal teenager reaching sexual maturity.
- Adult (1 – 5 years): A settled adult rabbit in its prime.
- Mature (5 – 8 years): Middle age — watch weight, teeth, and diet.
- Senior (8+ years): Softer food, warmth, and gentle vet checks.
🐹 Guinea Pig (typical lifespan 5 – 7 years)
- Baby / Pup (0 – 3 months): Born furred with open eyes, already eating solids.
- Young (3 – 12 months): A fast-growing, playful youngster.
- Adult (1 – 4 years): A confident, chatty full-grown piggy.
- Mature (4 – 6 years): Middle age — watch weight, joints, and vitamin C.
- Senior (6+ years): Soft bedding and regular vet care help a lot.
🐭 Hamster (typical lifespan 2 – 3 years)
- Baby / Pup (0 – 6 weeks): A tiny pup, weaned at three to four weeks.
- Young (6 weeks – 6 months): Energetic and already able to breed.
- Adult (6 – 18 months): The brief active prime — wheel-running and hoarding.
- Mature (18 – 24 months): Slowing down and sleeping more.
- Senior (24+ months): Old age — keep the cage warm, low, and easy.
How Long Do Small Pets Live?
Well-cared-for house rabbits commonly live 8 to 12 years; some reach their teens. Spaying or neutering and a hay-based diet help longevity.
Guinea pigs typically live 5 to 7 years. A diet rich in vitamin C and plenty of space support a longer, healthier life.
Hamsters live only about 2 to 3 years, so every month counts. Syrian and dwarf hamsters sit at the top and bottom of that range.
Choosing the right species changes both the age chart and the expected lifespan used for the "percentage of life lived" and "years remaining" estimates.
Why the "One Pet Year = Seven Human Years" Rule Is Wrong
The seven-year rule is a myth for small pets just as it is for dogs. A one-year-old rabbit is closer to a human 21 than a human 7, and a one-year-old hamster is already a human 42. Because each species packs its life into a different number of years, no single multiplier can be right for all three — the only accurate approach is a separate chart per species, which is exactly what this tool uses.
How to Use This Calculator
- Choose your pet species: Pick rabbit, guinea pig, or hamster so the correct chart and lifespan are used.
- Enter your pet's age: Type the age in years, and optionally add the extra months for precision.
- Click Calculate Human Age: The tool interpolates the human-equivalent age from that species' chart.
- Review the results: See the human age, the life stage, the animated life timeline, the yearly aging rate, the percentage of life lived, the estimated years remaining, and the cross-species comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate a small pet's age in human years?
Rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters each age on their own curve, growing up fast and then slowing down. This calculator reads your pet's age off a species-specific age chart and interpolates between the nearest points. A 1-year-old rabbit is about 21 human years, a 1-year-old guinea pig about 20, and a 1-year-old hamster about 42, because a hamster's whole life is compressed into roughly two to three years.
How old is my rabbit in human years?
A rabbit matures quickly in its first year, reaching roughly the human equivalent of 21 by age one. After that it ages about six human years for every rabbit year, so a 4-year-old rabbit is about 39 human years, a 6-year-old about 51, and an 8-year-old rabbit is a senior at about 63 human years.
How old is my hamster in human years?
Hamsters live only about two to three years, so they age extremely fast. A 6-month-old hamster is already about 28 human years, a 1-year-old about 42, and a 2-year-old hamster is an elderly human of about 70. One hamster month is worth several human years.
Do rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters age at the same rate?
No, and that is the key point. At the very same calendar age of two years, a rabbit is a young adult of about 27 human years, a guinea pig about 30, but a hamster is already elderly at about 70. That is why using one shared multiplier for all small pets, or the dog-and-cat rules, gives the wrong answer.
How long do small pets live?
With good care, rabbits typically live about 8 to 12 years, guinea pigs about 5 to 7 years, and hamsters about 2 to 3 years. Diet, housing, exercise, genetics, and veterinary care all affect how close an individual pet comes to these ranges.
When is a small pet considered a senior?
A rabbit is generally a senior from about 8 years, a guinea pig from about 6 years, and a hamster from about 2 years. Senior small pets benefit from softer food, warm and low-level housing, easy access to water, and more frequent gentle vet checks.
