About Australia Income Tax Calculator

The Australia Income Tax Calculator turns any salary or wage into what actually lands in your bank account. It works out your income tax for 2026-27 or 2025-26, the Medicare levy and any surcharge, and your HECS-HELP repayment, then shows your pay per year, month, fortnight, week and hour. It also handles a package that includes super, salary sacrifice, and, at tax time, your estimated refund from your deductions and the tax withheld.

At a Glance

Australia Income Tax Calculator shows your take-home pay after income tax, the Medicare levy and HECS-HELP for 2026-27 or 2025-26, and estimates your tax refund from your deductions.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your income and choose how it is quoted: per year, month, fortnight, week or hour. If the figure is a package that includes super, tick My salary includes super.
  2. Pick your tax year and residency. Foreign residents have no tax-free threshold and pay no Medicare levy; working holiday makers pay 15% from the first dollar.
  3. Add your details: your HECS-HELP debt and balance, and whether you hold private hospital cover.
  4. Open More options to add salary sacrifice, your deductions and the tax withheld, if you want a refund estimate.
  5. Press Calculate My Tax to see your take-home pay, every deduction, the bracket ladder and your true marginal rate.

Most Australian tax calculators stop at a single number. This one is built to answer the question people actually have next: what happens if I earn a bit more? The true marginal rate meter re-runs the entire calculation on your income plus $1,000 and shows you exactly how that extra money is split — which is how it catches the hidden rate spikes that a plain bracket table hides completely.

Australian income tax rates 2026-27 (residents)

Taxable incomeRate on this sliceTax on the full band
$0 – $18,200Nil (tax-free threshold)$0
$18,201 – $45,00015c per $1 over $18,200$4,020
$45,001 – $135,000$4,020 + 30c per $1 over $45,000$31,020
$135,001 – $190,000$31,020 + 37c per $1 over $135,000$51,370
$190,001 and over$51,370 + 45c per $1 over $190,000—

These rates exclude the 2% Medicare levy. In 2025-26 the second bracket was 16% rather than 15%, so the 2026-27 cut is worth up to $268 a year to anyone earning above $45,000. The same bracket drops again to 14% on 1 July 2027, and a new Working Australians Tax Offset of up to $250 begins in the 2027-28 income year.

The Medicare levy, and the shading band nobody mentions

The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income. Below the low-income threshold — $28,011 for singles — you pay none of it. What surprises people is the band just above: the levy phases in at 10 cents per extra dollar until it reaches the full 2% at about $35,013. Inside that band your real marginal rate is 10 percentage points higher than the tax table suggests, so someone on $30,000 keeps only 75c of their next dollar rather than the 85c the bracket implies. The calculator measures this rather than assuming it.

Medicare levy surcharge thresholds 2026-27

TierSingleFamilySurcharge
Base$105,000 or less$210,000 or less0%
Tier 1$105,001 – $123,000$210,001 – $246,0001.0%
Tier 2$123,001 – $164,000$246,001 – $328,0001.25%
Tier 3$164,001 and over$328,001 and over1.5%

The surcharge only applies if you do not hold private hospital cover, and it is charged on your whole income, not just the part above the threshold. That makes it a genuine cliff: earning one dollar over $105,000 costs you more than $1,050. Family thresholds rise by $1,500 for each dependent child after the first.

HECS-HELP repayments are now marginal

From 1 July 2025 compulsory study and training loan repayments changed completely. The old system charged a percentage of your entire income, so crossing a threshold by a dollar could cost hundreds. The new system works like income tax — you only repay on the income above the threshold.

Repayment income (2026-27)Compulsory repayment
$0 – $69,528Nil
$69,529 – $129,71715c per $1 over $69,528
$129,718 and over$9,028 + 17c per $1 over $129,717
Above about $186,050Capped at 10% of your total repayment income

In 2025-26 the same bands sat at $67,000 and $125,000. A HECS-HELP repayment is not a tax: every dollar reduces your loan balance, so the money is not lost, it just does not reach your account this year. Enter your balance and the calculator projects how many years the debt takes to clear once indexation is accounted for.

Estimate your tax refund

Your employer withholds tax from each pay as if you had no deductions. When you lodge your return, the ATO works out your tax on your income minus your deductions, so the tax your deductions save comes back as a refund. Enter your deductions, and the tax withheld from your income statement in myGov, under More options. You may owe tax instead if you had two jobs at once, claimed the tax-free threshold twice, or had income with no tax withheld.

Salary sacrifice into super

Salary sacrifice moves part of your pay into super before tax. Inside super it is taxed at 15%, so it saves tax when your own rate is higher. On a $100,000 salary, sacrificing $5,000 lowers your tax by about $1,600. Sacrificed amounts still count as income for the Medicare levy surcharge and HECS-HELP repayments, and the calculator includes them there.

Three ways people get their Australian tax wrong

Thinking a pay rise moves all your income into a higher bracket. It never does. Only the slice above the threshold is taxed at the higher rate — which is exactly what the bracket ladder shows.

Confusing salary with package. A "$110,000 package" usually includes 12% super, making the actual salary about $98,214. Tick My salary includes super and the calculator splits it for you.

Ignoring the surcharge cliff. Going from $104,999 to $105,001 without hospital cover adds more than $1,050 of surcharge on your entire income. Basic hospital cover frequently costs less than the surcharge it removes.

Frequently asked questions

What are the Australian income tax rates for 2026-27?
For Australian residents in 2026-27 the first 18,200 dollars is tax free, income from 18,201 to 45,000 dollars is taxed at 15 per cent, from 45,001 to 135,000 dollars at 30 per cent, from 135,001 to 190,000 dollars at 37 per cent, and above 190,000 dollars at 45 per cent. The 15 per cent rate replaced the previous 16 per cent rate on 1 July 2026, and it falls again to 14 per cent on 1 July 2027. These rates exclude the 2 per cent Medicare levy.
How much is the Medicare levy?
The Medicare levy is 2 per cent of your taxable income and is paid on top of your income tax. If you earn below the low-income threshold of 28,011 dollars for singles you pay nothing, and just above it the levy phases in at 10 cents per extra dollar until the full 2 per cent applies at about 35,013 dollars. Foreign residents and working holiday makers do not pay the Medicare levy.
How is my HECS-HELP repayment calculated?
Since 1 July 2025 HECS-HELP repayments are marginal, like income tax. In 2026-27 you repay nothing below 69,528 dollars, then 15 cents for each dollar above that up to 129,717 dollars, then 17 cents for each dollar above 129,717. The total is capped at 10 per cent of your repayment income. Under the old system a percentage was charged on your entire income, so a small pay rise could cost hundreds of dollars.
Is a HECS-HELP repayment a tax?
No. A compulsory HECS-HELP repayment reduces your student loan balance dollar for dollar, so unlike tax the money is not gone, it pays down a debt you owe. It does still reduce the cash that reaches your bank account each pay, which is why this calculator shows it separately from your income tax and Medicare levy.
What is the Medicare levy surcharge and how do I avoid it?
The Medicare levy surcharge is an extra 1 to 1.5 per cent charged to Australian residents who do not hold private hospital cover and earn above 105,000 dollars as a single or 210,000 dollars as a family in 2026-27. It applies to your whole income, not just the amount above the threshold, so crossing the threshold by one dollar can cost more than 1,000 dollars. Taking out basic hospital cover often costs less than the surcharge.
What is the low income tax offset?
The low income tax offset, or LITO, is worth up to 700 dollars a year. You receive the full amount if you earn up to 37,500 dollars, then it reduces by 5 cents per dollar to 325 dollars at 45,000 dollars, and by a further 1.5 cents per dollar until it disappears at 66,667 dollars. It reduces your income tax only and can never reduce your Medicare levy or your HECS-HELP repayment.
Does this calculator include superannuation?
Your employer pays the super guarantee of 12% on top of your salary, so it does not come out of your take-home pay. The calculator shows that super and your total package. If the figure you have already includes super, tick My salary includes super, and if you salary sacrifice extra into super, enter it under More options.
How do I estimate my tax refund?
Open More options and enter your work-related deductions and the tax withheld shown on your income statement in myGov. The calculator works out the tax for the year on your income less your deductions and compares it with what was withheld. If you leave the withheld box empty, it assumes your employer withheld the usual amount, so the refund shown is what your deductions give back: $2,000 of deductions on an $85,000 salary returns about $640.
My job offer is a package that includes super. What is my salary?
Tick My salary includes super. A package includes the 12% super guarantee your employer pays into your fund, so a $110,000 package is a salary of about $98,214, and that salary is what is taxed and paid to you.
Does salary sacrifice into super save tax?
Yes, if your marginal rate is above 15%. Salary you sacrifice goes into super before income tax and is taxed there at 15% instead. On a $100,000 salary, sacrificing $5,000 cuts your tax by about $1,600, while the fund pays $750 of contributions tax. Sacrificed amounts still count as income for the Medicare levy surcharge and HECS-HELP, and all concessional contributions, including your employer's, share one yearly cap.

Estimates use the rates published by the Australian Taxation Office for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 income years. They do not include offsets other than the low income tax offset, investment income, capital gains or the private health insurance rebate. Your notice of assessment is the final word.
