How to Calculate Sales Tax

Sales tax is calculated by multiplying the purchase price by the tax rate. The formula is straightforward:

For example, if you buy an item for $125.00 and the sales tax rate is 8.25%:

• Tax Amount = $125.00 × 0.0825 = $10.31
• Total Price = $125.00 + $10.31 = $135.31

Reverse Sales Tax Calculation

If you know the total amount paid (including tax) and the tax rate, you can find the original pre-tax price:

For example, if you paid $108.25 total and the tax rate is 8.25%:

• Pre-Tax Price = $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00
• Tax Paid = $108.25 − $100.00 = $8.25

US State Sales Tax Rates

Sales tax rates in the United States vary significantly by state and locality. The rates shown in this calculator represent the combined average of state and local taxes. Key facts:

• No sales tax states: Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no state or local sales tax. Alaska has no state tax but allows local taxes.
• Highest combined rates: Louisiana and Tennessee lead at approximately 9.6–10.1%, followed by Arkansas (9.45%) and Washington (9.38%).
• Varying local taxes: Many states allow cities and counties to add local sales taxes on top of the state rate, which is why actual rates can differ from state-level rates alone.

Calculation Modes Explained

• Calculate Tax from Price: Enter the item price and tax rate to find the tax amount and total.
• Calculate Total (Price + Tax): Same inputs, but the result emphasizes the total price you will pay.
• Reverse: Find Pre-Tax Price: Enter the total amount you paid and the tax rate to find the original price before tax.
• Find Tax Rate: Enter the price and the tax amount to determine what tax rate was applied.

Sales Tax vs. VAT

Sales tax and Value Added Tax (VAT) are both consumption taxes, but they work differently:

• Sales tax is collected only at the final point of sale to the consumer. It is common in the United States.
• VAT is collected at each stage of production and distribution. It is common in Europe and most other countries.
• In practice, the consumer pays a similar amount, but VAT is already included in the displayed price in most countries, while US sales tax is added at checkout.

Common Tax-Exempt Items

Many US states exempt certain categories from sales tax:

• Groceries: Most states exempt unprepared food (but not restaurant meals)
• Prescription medications: Exempt in nearly all states
• Clothing: Exempt in some states (e.g., Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Minnesota)
• Back-to-school holidays: Many states offer temporary sales tax holidays for school supplies and clothing

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate sales tax?

To calculate sales tax, multiply the price of the item by the sales tax rate expressed as a decimal. For example, if an item costs $100 and the sales tax rate is 8.25%, the tax is $100 × 0.0825 = $8.25. The total price would be $100 + $8.25 = $108.25.

How do you reverse calculate sales tax from a total?

To find the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total by (1 + tax rate as decimal). For example, if the total is $108.25 and the tax rate is 8.25%, the pre-tax price is $108.25 ÷ 1.0825 = $100.00. The tax amount is $108.25 − $100.00 = $8.25.

What US states have no sales tax?

Five US states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. However, Alaska allows local jurisdictions to levy their own sales taxes, so some areas in Alaska do have sales tax.

Which US state has the highest sales tax?

Louisiana and Tennessee have the highest combined state and average local sales tax rates at approximately 9.6–10.1%. Other high-tax states include Arkansas (9.45%), Washington (9.38%), and Alabama (9.29%).

How do you find the sales tax rate from price and tax amount?

To find the tax rate, divide the tax amount by the pre-tax price and multiply by 100. For example, if you paid $8.25 tax on a $100 item, the tax rate is ($8.25 ÷ $100) × 100 = 8.25%.
