Understanding the Statistics

Word Count

Words are counted as sequences of characters separated by spaces or punctuation. The tool also recognizes CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), where each character counts as one word. Numbers, hyphenated words, and contractions are each counted as one word.

Character Count

Two character counts are provided:

Sentence Count

Sentences are identified by terminal punctuation marks (periods, question marks, exclamation points). Multiple punctuation marks are treated as a single sentence ending.

Paragraph Count

Paragraphs are separated by line breaks. Empty lines do not count as paragraphs.

Reading and Speaking Time

Time estimates are based on research-backed averages:

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this word counter?

Our word counter is highly accurate and follows standard word counting conventions. It counts all words separated by spaces and recognizes CJK characters. Results match those from major word processing software like Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

Does this tool count hyphenated words correctly?

Yes, hyphenated words (like well-being or twenty-one) are counted as single words, which is the standard convention in most word processors and publishing guidelines.

Can I use this for languages other than English?

Yes, our word counter supports multiple languages including English, Spanish, French, German, and CJK languages (Chinese, Japanese, Korean). The tool automatically detects and correctly counts words in different writing systems.

What is the difference between unique words and total words?

Total words count every word in your text, including repetitions. Unique words count each different word only once. For example, the cat sat on the cat has 6 total words but only 5 unique words (the appears twice, cat appears twice).

Why use reading time estimates?

Reading time helps content creators set reader expectations and improve user experience. It helps bloggers, publishers, and websites inform readers how long an article will take to read, improving engagement and completion rates.

Is my text stored or shared when I use this tool?

No, all text analysis happens in your browser or on our server temporarily for processing. We do not store, save, or share your text. Your content remains private and secure.
