Quick Answer
To convert an MP4 to a GIF, upload the video here, choose the output size and frame rate, click Convert to GIF, and download the animation. GIF is limited to 256 colours per frame and has no audio, and it stores every frame separately, so file size grows fast: keep clips short (under about 10 seconds), scale the width down to roughly 480 px, and use 10–15 fps to stay at a sensible size. Conversion runs in your browser through FFmpeg.wasm, so the video never leaves your device and there is no watermark or sign-up.
Common Use Cases
Reaction GIFs and memes
A two-second clip from a video becomes a shareable reaction image that plays automatically in chat and on forums.
Product and feature demos
A short GIF shows a workflow inline in a README, a documentation page or a landing page without a video player.
Bug reports and support tickets
GitHub, Jira and most helpdesks render GIFs inline, which makes them the quickest way to show a reproduction.
Email and newsletter animation
Most email clients block video but display animated GIFs, so a GIF is the practical way to add motion to a newsletter.
Autoplay without a player
GIFs loop automatically everywhere, with no play button, no controls and no autoplay restrictions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert an MP4 to a GIF?
Upload your MP4 to this page, choose the output size and frames per second, and click Convert to GIF. When the progress bar finishes, preview the animation and click Download GIF.
Why is my GIF so much bigger than the MP4?
MP4 uses modern video compression that only stores what changes between frames. GIF stores each frame as a separate palettised image with no temporal compression, so a GIF is routinely five to ten times larger than the equivalent MP4. Shorter clips, smaller dimensions and a lower frame rate are the three levers that bring the size down.
What frame rate should I use?
10 to 15 frames per second is the sweet spot for most GIFs. Below 10 fps motion looks obviously choppy; above 20 fps the file grows sharply for very little visible benefit, and many browsers and viewers throttle very fast GIFs anyway.
Why do the colours look worse in the GIF?
The GIF format allows only 256 colours per frame. Footage with gradients, skin tones, sunsets or smoke will show banding and dithering. There is no way around this in GIF; if colour accuracy matters, keep the clip as MP4 or WEBM.
Does the GIF keep the audio?
No. The GIF format has no audio track at all. If you need sound, keep the video as MP4.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Conversion runs through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser tab, so the file stays on your own device.
How long can the clip be?
Technically as long as your memory allows, but practically you should keep it under about ten seconds. A thirty-second GIF at a reasonable size is usually tens of megabytes, which is too large for most places you would want to post it.
Will the GIF loop?
Yes. Animated GIFs loop indefinitely by default in browsers and messaging apps.
