About Word Unscrambler
A word unscrambler turns a jumble of letters into every real word those letters can spell. Paste the tiles from your Scrabble rack, the mixed-up letters from a word puzzle, or the anagram in a crossword clue, and this tool checks all 359,039 words in its bundled dictionary to find each one your letters can build — not just the full-length anagrams, but every shorter word hiding inside them too.
What sets this unscrambler apart is that it shows its working. Every answer carries its Scrabble and Words With Friends score, any letter that a blank tile had to supply is highlighted inside the word, and the tool reports which tiles would still be sitting on your rack afterwards. That last detail decides real games: a 30-point word that strands a Q and a V on your rack is often a worse play than a 22-point word that leaves you clean.

How to Use the Word Unscrambler
- Type your letters into the Your Letters box — up to 15 tiles. Order does not matter, so RTEAINS and STAINER give identical results.
- Add blanks with ? for wildcard tiles. Two is the maximum, matching a real Scrabble set. Each blank can become any letter.
- Open More Filters if you need to narrow things down — force a starting letter, an ending letter, a letter the word must contain, or an exact word length. Switch the dictionary to Common words only to hide obscure dictionary fill.
- Click Unscramble Letters. Answers arrive grouped from longest to shortest, with your three best plays highlighted at the top.
- Filter or copy. Type in the filter box to narrow the visible answers instantly, or copy the whole list with one click.
How the Unscrambler Decides What Fits
Unscrambling is a multiset containment problem, not a simple letter-matching one. A word is playable only if your rack holds every letter it needs as many times as the word uses it. This is the distinction that trips up naive unscramblers: a rack of B, A, N, A contains all the letters in banana, yet cannot build it, because banana needs three A tiles and the rack holds two.
Blank tiles change the arithmetic. With one blank, a word is playable if it is short by at most one letter; with two blanks, by at most two. The tool tracks exactly which letters the blanks covered, marks them in the answer, and scores them as zero — because a blank tile is worth no points in either game, no matter which letter it represents.
Official Tile Values
| Letters | Scrabble | Words With Friends |
|---|---|---|
| A, E, I, O, N, R, T, L, S, U | 1 point | 1–2 points |
| D, G | 2 points | 2–3 points |
| B, C, M, P | 3 points | 4 points |
| F, H, V, W, Y | 4 points | 3–5 points |
| K | 5 points | 5 points |
| J, X | 8 points | 8–10 points |
| Q, Z | 10 points | 10 points |
| Blank tile | 0 points | 0 points |
The two games value letters differently, which is why the same rack can produce two different best plays. Words With Friends charges more for C and G but less for X, so a word that wins in one game can be second-best in the other. Every answer here carries both scores, so you never have to convert between them in your head.
Note that the highest-scoring word and the word you would actually play are often not the same. Word-game dictionaries are full of obscure fill, so the raw points winner may be something you have never seen. That is why the Your Best Plays panel shows the top scorer, the longest word, and the best everyday word side by side — the last of those is the one you can defend if an opponent challenges it.
Getting More Out of a Stubborn Rack
- Watch the vowel balance. A seven-tile rack plays best with two or three vowels. The Rack Balance meter tells you at a glance whether you are consonant-starved, and the classic advice — dump vowels early rather than hoarding them — follows directly from it.
- Chase the bingo. Using all seven tiles in one turn scores a 50-point bonus in Scrabble and 35 in Words With Friends. When any answer uses every tile you entered, the tool flags it, because that bonus usually dwarfs the word's face value.
- Learn the two-letter words. QI, ZA, XI, JO and XU turn your most expensive tiles into points in tight spots. Set the Word length filter to 2 letters to list every one your rack can make.
- Use the ending filter for hooks. Filtering by an ending such as ING, ERS or IEST finds the words that extend cleanly onto letters already on the board.
- Think about what stays behind. Each answer reports its leftover tiles. Clearing a J or a V is often worth more over two turns than squeezing out a few extra points now.
Beyond Word Games
Word unscrambling is not only for Scrabble. Cryptic crossword clues routinely hide an anagram behind an indicator word such as confused, broken or arranged, and the fodder is spelt out right there in the clue. Word Jumble puzzles in newspapers scramble a single word per line. Text Twist, Anagrams and Wordscapes all reward finding every shorter word inside a longer set of letters. Teachers use unscrambling for spelling practice, and puzzle setters use it in reverse — to check that a set of letters has exactly one satisfying solution and not fourteen.
About the Dictionary
This tool searches a public-domain English word list of 359,039 entries, from two letters up to fifteen, covering inflections, plurals and verb forms as well as base words. That breadth is deliberate: word-game dictionaries are famously generous, and a list that only knew everyday vocabulary would hide the very words that win games. Because such a list also contains a long tail of rarities, common everyday words are flagged with ★ and listed first, and the Common words only setting hides the rest entirely. The list is not the official TWL or SOWPODS tournament lexicon, so a competitive club game should still be settled by the dictionary on the table.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a word unscrambler work?
It compares your letters against a dictionary using multiset containment: a word is playable if every letter it needs appears in your rack at least as many times as the word uses it. The word banana needs three A letters, so a rack with only one A cannot build it even though it contains the letter A. This tool checks all 359,039 words in its dictionary that are short enough to fit your rack.
What does the question mark do?
A question mark stands for a blank or wildcard tile that can become any letter. You may use up to two, matching a real Scrabble set. When a blank is used, the tool highlights the exact letter it had to become inside the word, so you can see what you are actually playing.
Do I have to use all of my letters?
No. The unscrambler returns every word that can be built from any subset of your tiles, from two letters upward, and tells you which tiles would be left on your rack. Words that use every single tile are labelled Uses all your tiles, which in Scrabble earns the 50 point bingo bonus.
Why is a word missing from the results?
Either the word needs a letter your rack does not have enough copies of, or it is not in the bundled dictionary, or the display cap hid it. The page shows at most 500 words with common everyday words listed first, so rare dictionary fill is what gets trimmed. Adding a filter such as starts with or exact length brings hidden words back into view.
Are the Scrabble scores accurate?
The letter values are the official Scrabble tile values, which are the same in the TWL and SOWPODS word lists, and the Words With Friends column uses that game's own different values. Blank tiles score zero, as in the real games. The scores do not include board bonuses such as double word squares or the 50 point bingo bonus, because those depend on where you place the word.
Can I use this as an anagram solver?
Yes. Type the letters of the word or phrase, leave out spaces and punctuation, and look at the first group: words marked Uses all your tiles are full anagrams of your letters. For example, LISTEN gives SILENT, ENLIST and TINSEL. Shorter words hidden inside the letters are listed after them, longest first.
Can I unscramble a word with more than 15 letters?
The tool accepts up to 15 tiles including blanks. That covers a 7 tile Scrabble rack plus board letters you are hooking onto, and it keeps the search fast. For longer strings, unscramble the most promising 15 letters first, or use the contains filter to force a key letter combination.
