The dining rule is about the chairs, not the table. The rug must extend at least 24 inches (about 60 cm) beyond every edge of the table so that when someone pushes their chair back to sit down or stand up, all four chair legs stay on the rug. If the back legs drop off the edge the chair catches and the rug bunches. Match the rug shape to the table: rectangular rug for a rectangular table, round rug for a round table.

For a rug placed under the bed, aim for 18 to 24 inches (45–60 cm) of rug showing along both sides and the foot of the bed — that soft border is what you step onto in the morning. The rug's top edge usually lines up with the headboard, leaving your nightstands on the bare floor. Smaller alternatives include a pair of runners along each side of the bed, or a single rug across the foot.

Tips for Getting Rug Size Right

• Tape it out. Before buying, mark your calculated rug size on the floor with painter's tape and live with it for a day.
• When in doubt, size up. A slightly larger rug almost always looks better than one that is too small.
• Keep the frame even. Aim for the same border of bare floor on all sides so the rug reads as centered.
